love your question. i always thought that life in prison was nothing more than a slow death compared to that of the death penalty, so to me its much harsher and sad to watch.

ARTmom
No-and I hate that we have to pay for that

Cindy
Yes, life with out the possibility of parole is far worse than the death penalty!

Most people hate being locked up for any amount of time. Oh, there will be the people that will say that they can do the time standing on their head, like it's no big deal. Any one that would say that is lying about it.

There are long hours of bore dome, same routine every day with nothing to really look forward to. Being locked up is no picnic. It's over crowded, loud and a very abrasive place to live.

You hear the constant banging of cell doors, steel on steel. The sounds of TVs, all tuned to different stations, we had that for years until they went to a different system. People are always loud when they are talking with one another. They will stand right next to some one else and they are practically yelling to each other. The level of the noise is nerve racking.

There really isn't any place to have privacy when your locked up, so that there are always other people around. Every one can see them using the bathroom. They are only allowed a certain amount of time to be able to take a shower, it generally 15 minutes. The same goes for the amount of time that they get to eat.

There are those people who will shove thing down their toilet to stop it up and it will back up and the entire range floor will be flooded. There will some time be fecal matter floating in the water. It is a horible place to have to live.

Trust me, being locked up for the rest of their life is a far worse thing than getting the death penalty.

BTW: Our inmates didn't have access to the internet.

Harshness depends on many differnet things, some ppl have said ppl grow accustomed to being in jail............ The person that said that, has watched one too many movies.

If you are doing the 'eye for an eye' method, then it is far harsher, if you think that ppl won't committ crimes becuase they know they could get the death penalty thats just a pipe dream.

As someoen has already mentioend it is far more expensive to kill someone, than to keep them in prison for life.

Can be, depending on how you look at it. However, the cost to having people just spend the rest of their lives in jail takes a toll on our budget, aside from just executing the rotten criminals who do indeed deserve to die.

Seeing as they get food, exercise, tv, internet access, books, magazines and time to socialize...NO. It's is not that harsh of a punishment. We shouldn't be wasting tax payer money on making these degenerates comfortable. I say shoot em in the head with a 10 cent bullet and be done with them.

wham-o
hell yeah.its controlled torture.

pelcos
well i think there should be but there should be some way to make them pay for all the food and everything else they use and why should a muder be aloud to see there family why sould i have to pay the way for some scum

It may be but there are reasons for society to prefer that LWOP be the most serious punishment allowed.

Max
No, I believe knowing the exact date, time and method of your death is just about the worst thing any human being can experience.

Being locked up is harsh, but you become accustomed to it and eventually give up.

But to be able to countdown the moments you have left to live is a hell I can't imagine.

Yes, and no. Some area the prison is better than a dang resort and being paid for by our tax dollars. I say we send them down to Mexican prison areas and pay the fraction of the cost for their "welfare". Sadly the last few decades it the prisoner's rights that are better protected than the victims and or their families.

LadyTazzy
For me it would be. I can't imagine being locked up like that for the rest of my life. I guess it just depends on the person. I think our prison system needs some HUGE changes....and HARSH changes. I'd like to see the inmates be fed as little as possible, like bread and water, and NO recreation time. Lock them in a cell and leave them there. If the system would change, I could see the crime rate going way down. I'm sick and tired of paying taxes to support criminals!

Depends. If you rape a child and are sent to prison, you are going to get your butt beat. Otherwise no, and they might need to toughen up.

Shane P
NO- all the bleeding harts are keeping them alive... people on row are there for a reason... they are very very evil people who don't care about anyone... and we need to stop paying for them...

I can't assume to speak for others, but I would not suffer a life in prison, period. I would much prefer the death penalty and if I wasn't given the choice, I would take matters into my own hands. If I had received a life sentence and was guilty of the crime, I would just hang myself later in the cell. If I had received a life sentence and was innocent of the crime, I would make a play for the bailiff's gun and take as many of my captors with me as possible. Either way, I would not set in a prison for life.

grump56
Probably is but it does not bring me the sense of justice that the death penalty does and pretty much gets rid of any chance they might escape and do it again.

money wise it is cheaper to keep someone in prison for life than it is to put them to death (i know no one will beleive this but it is true). i say the punishment is fitting as long as they go in and never come out. the harshness level is moot.
