Do you think that police should carry tasers instead of traditional firearms?Explain your answer...?

No for two reasons...first what good is a taser going to do against someone with a 12 ga shotgun or .357 mag. Tasers do not have the range that handguns would have or the capacity to hold out for a long gun fight. Police have the responsibity of protecting their fellow officers, themselves, and the public. I feel much safer when they have proper equipment.

Also, when I was taking classes we had an eithical debate on this topic. I found that many officers (NOT ALL and NOT MOST) are more likely to get trigger happy with tasers because the are designated "less leathal" forms of defense. I do agree that they do work in certain situations and the likely hood of someone dying from being tasered is slim... I agree with the fact they are carried but I do not think they would replace firearms...

Imagine a shootout with a terrorist carrying an AK-47 about 10-15 meters away and a cop waving a taser in his face... ooooh I'm sure The terrorist would be TERRIFIED..

As long as the criminals have firearms, of course the cops need them too. No one wants to bring a knife to a gunfight, as the saying goes.

I think the police have to fight fire with fire. If the criminals are carrying tasers then certainly the police should. Sorry, can't give you the liberal answer that your teachers probably want to hear.

There was a shootout at a bank in North Hollywood years ago, not exactly sure of the year, when you look at that answer you're own question.
The robbers had AK-47s and full body armor, the cops had 9mm pistols.

Tasers have limited range, just a few feet. It's a one-time use at a time weapon, it has to be reset (several minutes).

Let's say three or four guys rob a bank and they have firearms - what is a cop going to do if all he has is a taser or baton?

I think they should carry both. There are situations, and a cop without a gun is just a security officer.

HOWEVER! I think that there should be thorough training courses. And if they dont now, a report should be filed each time a taser is discharged, just like a firearm.

A taser can be just as lethal as a gun, depending on the condition of the person at the receiving end.

Not a chance. A taser will do absolutely nothing against a thief/murderer with a gun. This shouldn't even be a debatable issue.

Tasers are a tool, but can't be counted on. They are blocked by heavy clothes, mental discipline and general craziness. There was a demonstration on the Discovery Channel (or one of those similar cable channels) recently where a guy demonstrated the ability to take a fully charged taser hit, knock the prongs out of his body, fall down for only a second, stand back up and immediately charge the person who fired it.

We need to stop coddling criminals in this country with a weak criminal justice system, weak punishment, weak imprisonment, etc. We need to hit them hard with severe enforcement, severe punishment and horrendous imprisonment conditions.

You have to be kidding when you are suggesting finding ANOTHER way to go easy on criminals. America is a GREAT place for criminals to live. Thanks to socialists, Christians and other weak-on-crime types that allow them to live a peaceful existence.

The only thing a criminal deserves is a clipload of .45 hydra shoks.

No, firearms will always be a necessity. We must consider the life of the police officer over the life of a criminal. The police officer always needs a way to "step up" in force. As in, a criminal is fist fighting, the cop can stun him or hit him with the billy stick, the criminal has a knife, the cop can stun him or pull out his gun.

In addition, traditional stun weaponry (beanbag guns, disc guns, stun guns) have a much shorter range than real guns, and are not as accurate. You will put the officer at risk if he goes against an armed opponent.

As long as criminals have access to guns, police officers need guns to protective themselves. It would be foolish to ask someone to protect the lives of others and enforce the law if they can not protect themselves.

Police should almost ALWAYS carry a pistol, or some type of firearm, now whether or not that should be used is up to the situation. Police put their lives on the line for our safety, we shouldn't deny them the tools the need to stay alive.
