I,ve heard of a " few bad apples" but from what Ive seen and heard, the whole barrel wants throwing away and afresh start made! These people have become a law unto themselves and are rarely brought to book for their actions.

I do agree that there are bad ones amongst us, but please don't forget some of the good work that people do!
I agree I do work with some complete idiots but i also work with some of the most hard working people I know.
Please don't tar us all with the same brush. We most certainly are not a law unto ourselves.... we are accountable for everything, the trouble is this job has become so politically correct, some are afraid to do their job properly. I am sorry if you have had some bad experiences, but just remember there are lots of aspects to police work, not just pulling people over and giving them speeding tickets, but A) dealing with child protection issue's, B) monitoring paedophiles C) dealing with rape victims to name just a few! Yes we don't always get it right, but red tape and laughable convictions at court don't exactly help us! |

Theres NO minimum academic requirements to get into the police force .... thats one of the major problems. |

No, I'd have to put them in at third with politicians and the NHS coming in at first and second.
I have read through the other responses and couldn't help but laugh. It's funny how the officer seemed to mention all the most serious crimes (and most infrequently committed) and that he mentions treating rape victims considering how they are forever being criticised on the lack of sensitivity offered to these very victims.
He blames the courts for decissions which make them look silly. As a law student let me just say this; do your job properly and these incidents won't happen. Two of the most common causes for cases being thrown out are insufficient evidence (who's supposed to collect that then?) and breaches of suspect's rights, inparticular PACE 1984 (Sound familiar?). I get quite angry with hearing officers bleating stuff like this becuase quite frankly lawyers have a job to do too and it is just typical that when a result doesn't go their way because they haven't done their job properly they blame everyone else in sight!
I am not a great lover of the police force, as you can probably tell, although I do recognise they are a vital ingredient to society and let's face it, without their blundering people like me would have a harder time finding work at the end of uni than we do now. My big criticism of them is that they are ineffectively policed themselves, the Police Complaints Commission relies far too heavily on support from the very people they are supposed to investigate to be of any real use. This is the one area of policing which should be sorted, I suspect then that we might get a decent police force. |

Whatever you think about the police, they are a necessary element of a functioning society. Unfortunately, human nature just isn't quite at a point where we can live harmoniously in an anarchic state. Hard as it may be to swallow, we need government services to keep things running smoothly, and to make sure that the laws and services that benefit us all are enforced and preserved. |

U could be right but if you're ever in real trouble...say if you've just been burgled or a family member attacked....who you gonna call...not Ghostbusters! |

Not at all. We are under treat more than ever before. It's good to see a person take a job of danger by choice to keep us safe. I am not a policeman but i am glad to see them around |

There are some bent coppers I expect, but on the whole they are there to serve & protect us. If you were mugged, burgled or whatever, don't say you wouldn't report it to the police....without a police force, Britain would turn into Arnachy! |
