The police have a great respect for the law abiding public. |

Another opinion: I think the police have definite respect for the public. Disdain (to me) isn't a good alternative option for your question. In addition to respect, the opposite that I might choose is something along the lines of alienation. No matter what the officer does, there's a feeling that his/her efforts are more source for fault finding (by the public) than appreciation. The new officer spends the first years of his/her career proudly going about business in the community, but many officers end up feeling as though they just don't have the necessary community (or from the public at large) support to leave them each day with a feeling of great self worth. And the media tends to fuel that feeling.
I don't think the police will disdain the public. But I think it more common that the police will often feel disdained 'by' the public. |

Respect for the public. They have sworn their lives as public servants. They offer their lives to the people they serve. There are a few bad apples but it would be the same if the police judged every citizen by a bad experience. |

both. I have known several police and troopers who tell me never to join. I wouldn't want a job where just seeing my uniform incites hatred. |

It`s not a question of distain or respect. You constantly see officers with 10 15 20 years service. Sure some have served more than one community. So you have to ask yourself, would someone serve the public that long that he or she distained? |

I feel that small town law enforcement people are quite respectful and polite. Houston is a nightmare where you don't know whether to be more afraid of the police or the criminal. Most large cities are this way..................city cops treat drug addicts, etc. like they are slime...............it is an illness. I left a big city to move to a small town because of foul mouthed police. |

They dont respect the public, are you kidding me? I was rear ended by a cop, and I had back surgery after. They thru my case out after 4 yrs of working on it, 750,000 dollar case, all becuz on the original claim the words...(Penalty of Pergury)...were missing. TYPO, got it thrown out. This is true, so NO, they dont respect the public! |

I think that as with all people who have to deal with the public, it would depend on the person they are dealing with. People have a disrespect and disdain for the police. Sorry but when you are disrespectful and mean you deserve what you get. |

Both..... just like anyone else. The public is made up of people who deserve one or the other. |

I think it depends on the cop, I have encountered a hole cops that just want to make another arrest so they can brag to their little buddies and high five em, but .....I have also met ones that are cool and will work with you if you work with them they seem to be more objective and less narrowminded and do not abuse their authority!! |

The police resect those who deserve respect. The public doesn't always respect the police. Instead of taking responsibility for doing something wrong and getting caught, sometimes the bad guy blames the cop for catching him and gives him a bunch of crap. |

We treat everybody with the same respect and courtesy as we would have ourselves treated. Until, that is, they give us cause to change. We speak up or down depending on how we are treated. Up shot is, treat us with respect and courtesy and you will receive the same treatment. |

Why would you ask such a question? Have you had some unpleasant interactions with the police? The police are us - just like the government and the military and congress, etc. |

Respect. If the police do not respect the public, how can they expect respect and support from the public? Think about it. |

I have absolutely no idea how they feel about the public. I have nothing but respect for them, regardless, though. |

Most cops join the force for the right reasons. They want to help the public and keep their neighborhood safe. I think these guys do as good a job as they can and I am grateful for them. As with any profession, there are some that do not belong on the force. They are either burned out or are corrupt. That's where it is very important to have a chief or captain how is on the ball and knows what is going on. I have always found in my interactions with a cop, that if you treat them professionally you get the same courtesy. |

police put their lives on the line every minute of their working day to protect the public, does that sound like disdain? it sounds to me like the ultimate show of respect and caring. |

The police have adopted a mentality that it is them against the rest of the world. Law enforcement in today's world is almost rendered useless by their attitude. The American public has previously tried to help law enforcement and still do, however not to the point they used too. |
