Does a SILENCER lesson the impact of the bullet?

WOW this is unusual. normally there are a bunch of crazy answers and several real good ones. this time it seems all are way off the mark.

A Gun makes noise in three ways. to truely silence a weapon you must address all three.
1. The blast of the gun going off (the escaping gasses coming out the barrel

2. The Crack of a high speed bullet (a sonic boom)

3. The sound of the action of the weapon itself (Cycling of the bolt and hammer, firing pin, whatever.

Most silencers address the first two only. Usually by trapping and bleeding off some of the gasses to slow the bullet below subsonic speed. this lessens the muzzel blast as well as stops the sonic boom of the bullet's passage through the air.
This slower bullet has a lesser impact because it has less kinetic energy to transfer to the target on impact. The difference though is hardly enough to matter to the person getting shot.

Watch any good demo video (Movies are notoriously wrong when it comes to weapon sounds) of an H&K MP5SD firing.
other than a soft thupping sound the loudest thing you hear is the clickity-click of the bolt cycling on full auto.

no a silencer only cut down on the noise of the gun..it does not affect the bullet

NO, but a high speed bullet can negate the effects of the silencer (sonic boom)

As I understand it, a silencer doesn't affect the pressure of the gases until after the projectile has left the barrel. all it does is disperse the gases created from the explosion that propels the bullet. If this is true, the projectiles velocity would not be affected, nor would the force of impact.

Usually, the bullet has already left the barrel of the weapon when the silencer performs its function, so I would have to say it does not affect the bullets performance.

There are several differant kinds of silencers on the market today. They can be divided into those that screw onto the barrel, and those that are actually part of the barrel.

Those that are intergal, or part of the barrel, usually cover the last several inches of the barrel which has ports drilled into it. These ports bleed off gunpowder gases into the back part of the suppressor and make it more effective. However, this lowers bullet speed.

Other suppressors that lower bullet speed are those that contain metal mesh or rubber wipes that the bullet has to blast through. These suppressors are easy to make, and are effective, but wear out after less than a dozen shots.

Most modern suppressors are made with baffles that have about 50 thousands of an inch clearance for the bullet. The baffles are usually conical shaped and make the gas flow turbulant, slow it down and cool it off, this lowers the noise level. As long as the suppressor is aligned properly the bullets will not touch the baffles and slow down. Intergal suppressors will also have baffles in front of the muzzle like a screw-on supressor. Baffled suppressors will last for thousands of rounds unless over-heated.

Suppressors are most effective when used with subsonic bullets. This is because there is no sonic boom from a bullet moving slower than the speed of sound. It is also because a typical subsonic load of powder for a rifle cartridge is usually half the load of a normal supersonic load. This means much less gas to cool and contain in the suppressor.

When using a modern suppressor, bullets may actually speed up by about 10-30 feet per second compared to the same load fired from the same rifle without the suppressor attached. This is because the suppressor contains the gasses as they speed past the bullet at greater than 5000 fps and push on it a bit as it passes through.

no all it does is change the rate the gas is released from the bullit by slowly releasin the gas this quiets the sound

no not at all it has the same impact. Even if you use a patato as a silencer it doesn't slow the bullet down.

Silencers don't allow bullets to go the distance, but it doesn't lessen the impact, because most bullets fragment on impact. People who use silencers, use them at close range.

It does not slow the bullet down significantly it will leave striations on the bullet though
