You definitely do not have to and it won't necessarily make u better. Studying criminal justice, will make going through the academy a lot easier in that you will be familiar with a lot of the legal terms that will be used while you are being trained. Once you get on the street, however, studying criminal justice will not help you in the least. Police work is more of an instinct thing, that some people pick up over time and frankly some never really pick it up at all. Remember that in most police departments, you will have to be a patrol officer for a few years before you will be eligible for detective work. Hope this helps |

It helps...bet before u become a homicide detective you have to be an beat officer then after 2 to 3 years you can test to become a homicide detective....but YES it does help a lot if you have a criminal justice degree. |

If you go for a CJ degree prior to joining a department I think that it will actually hinder your chances. Depending on the department you either have to test or have to preform a number of exemplary feats to become a detective. Once you are the police and you want to go for CJ do it but wait until you are on the job, you will get plenty of college CJ classes in the academy.
If you are currently in college I suggest taking classes in the hard sciences or the social sciences, anything that stresses critical thinking. Philosophy is good.
Critical thinking will serve you well and help you with detective testing and your daily performance as an officer and if you make it as a detective. |
