Does any one you know have an addiction problem?

I know a lot of people addicted to heroin. Throughout the 90's there was a very high grade of heroin in australia which was very addictive and very cheap. For some reason the stigma of needle use dissappeared as a new needle exchange program came into place and it seemed everyone i knew was injecting drugs of every type. Those who were not addicted to heroin were addicted to amphetamines (speed). Now.. a decade later most of those people have lost jobs, everything they own, health has deteriorated and the effect of their addictions is so much more than a physical craving. It changes a persons life and those around them. I could write for pages and pages on the effects of addiction and what it does to the individual and the family of them. It is completely all consuming and the addict will go to any lengths to get a fix day after day, year after year. Addictions do not go away but an addict can learn to live a clean life with lots of work on a daily basis. It is a disease which is with the addict for life and requires constant work to not relapse. Relapse is part of recovery and it does happen. When someone has a true addiction rational thought does not come into play. They become incapable of making decisions that they think are right and most addicts do not enjoy their addiction. It is a very very hard thing to take control over as most addicts will admit that they enjoy their drug of choice but because of the legal position and price of illegal drugs, the lifestyle which accompanies drug addiction is one that is hard to maintain and one that is destructive in endless ways. Nobody other than the addict themselves can make the decision to get clean and stay clean. No amount of intervention or outside influence will keep an addict clean. It may help to put them on the road to recovery but only when the addict themselves wishes to put the hard daily work in, will they remain clean. Many people believe that it is just a matter of choice and disipline but without experiencing first hand the grip of an addiction, can a person truely understand what is involved. It is so much more than a choice. It is mental, physical and it changes the chemical balance and receptors in the brain. If you are addicted or have someone close to you that is addicted, my advice is to get as much information that you can get your hands on. There are thousands of places that offer free info and help.

One of my closest family members had been addicted, actually we ( including all my family ) are trying to help this person to succeed in rehab. It has been hard, but seems that its working.

MY FATHER WAS ADDICTED TO ALCOHOL HE PASSED AWAY WHEN HE WAS 48 YRS OLD HOW IT AFFECTED OUR FAMILY WE WILL NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN BECAUSE HIS ADDICTION TOOK OVER AND WE ALL MISS HIM

Yes, a family member. She isolated everyone, family and friends, because they won't enable her drug use. She lost her husband of 36 years because of it. She recently disowned her son and daughter(again). She goes around telling people that no one loves her. Nothing is ever her fault. All the other people are always the ones who're in the wrong.
How can someone with a genius IQ be so stupid?

I had an addiction, well I guess I kinda still do! It is hard. The stuff I did is sooo easy to get ahold of! A few people in my family, (cousins) still do.....I find it hard to refuse to do the stuff, Luckily me hubby is there to pull me away, cause I dont think I can refuse if he wasnt there...it sux! Big time! Also I recently was addicted to some pain meds! Hubby got me off them, yeah it's just and uphill battle and very very tough! I havent ruined my family, hope that doesnt ever happen! Hubby said If I ever get addicted to a narcotic again he will leave! Hopefully thats a boost that will help me, stay clean forever!

Be more specific, most people know someone who is an addiction or has their own addiction. What are you really trying to ask?
