Did you use the word "becoming?" My friend, just about EVERY country on the earth is a police state.
It could be worse though. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being total responsible personal freedom, the U.S. is about a 5. Most countries are less than that.
I too dream of an America where we wake up and decide to set a higher goal than just being 1/2 free. That's why I vote Libertarian. |

We most definitely are becoming a police state.
James T, I don't see how Democrats have been any better at protecting the Constitution than Republicans have. In fact, historically Democrats have been much worse. |

We are definitely becoming a police state. I remember the old days when you didn't have surveillance cameras everywhere. |

Wow...Found all the paranoid and conspiracy people. Traffic laws against the constitution what a whack job. The reason the government passes laws like this is to protect people so that they can drive in relative safety from one point to another, minus the morons who think they are race car drivers simply because they alone have found out that there is a gas pedal in their car. Unbelievable that the government actually did something right. What smoking law are you talking about, your not allowed to smoke in a federal building or in a hospital, but you can walk outside and smoke as much as want. If your referring to city ordinances, the city has hearings and some cities actually vote on it, what could be more American than that. The question you might ask yourself is "How am I able to sit here and write whatever I want without any consequences?" The reason; someone much braver than you makes sure that you can. |

Yes it is and most people are not aware because the media does not talk about it. Traffic and smoking laws pale in comparison to recent events. How about singling out and arresting journalists at the RNC protests merely for doing their jobs.
A state that prevents legitimate journalists from documenting and reporting the abuses of its law enforcement agencies has moved beyond a mere police state. It is awfully close to a fascist state, if not already there. |

No. I have been to countries that are a lot harder on human rights.........we would have a long way to go to come close to a Police State.
I have noticed (after answering well over a thousand questions in here and my years on the street) that people have a strange notion about exactly what their rights are. Many have no clue. A large segment of the ones that keep hollering about a Police State attribute things to the Patriot Act (i.e. the Carroll Doctrine) that have been common (and acceptable) Police procedure for decades. I think instead of becoming a Police State we are actually evolving into a country of the misinformed that slept through Government Class and can't understand why they can't yell fire in a movie theater. |

Such as laws to prevent water boarding? Now that could allow an enemy to cripple us. That should be against our constitution don't you think? |

When society has deteriorated to the point of no respect or common sense, measures have to be taken. The general deterioration of personal responsibilities and lack family values hasn't helped either. Look at the population 50 years ago and look at them now. To answer your question, no. Laws are being changed/created to meet the technology and changing threats to the USA. Those who cry about it need to take a look at life 10, 15, even 20 years ago. You would be doing the same thing with the same restrictions without the evolution of technology.
My "papers" aren't checked when leaving/going into each city nor is my house randomly searched due to my beliefs. The recorded cases are usually cried by the "fighting the machine" types who only post the facts that further their narrow vision argument. I usually tell these types that living in the USA isn't mandatory. They can go live in Angola or Sudan and tell me how much better life is in those countries. |

Not even close.
However, citizens, and non citizens, are becoming increasingly more violent.
Look inward before looking outward.

They are passing laws on everything now. This is crazy we have to get rid of these republicans and get the dems in there so we can have our country back. |

We the people in order to form a more perfect Union--
Do you not think you have a right to petition the government for grievances?
Smoking laws came about from non smokers rights?
Traffic laws came about from people who could not drive a horse let alone a contraption called the automobile.
I think you should read the Constitution and see what It actually says. |
