The official answer, is they burn in an incinerator.

That said, I have heard stories of evidence disappearring. And of material being close at hand in case some evidence was needed for the next arrest.

Copgirl
Turned in as evidence, then burned. No, we don't keep it and smoke it.

Most of the time, if I'm going to not cite the person for use, I will make them destroy it on the roadside... crush it, grind it, throw it in the sewer. If it's being seized as evidence, I take it in, log it, and leave it be, it's not my problem anymore.

Police Officer is part for safety/security of public in this universe , don't afraid from them & also cotrol the crime in the society, but public should co- operate them to perform their duties.

Like Copgirl said, it is taken in as evidence and then usually burned. Very rarely is it used as "bait" or whatever you want to call it for the next case. And contrary to what some very immature and uneducated people may think, cops are not(generally and I will show you why I don't say all) stupid enough to take it or any evidence for that matter.

Now for the reason I didn't say all:
My dad is a state police officer and he knew a guy years ago that pulled over somebody and placed them under arrest for a large amount of pot. Another car arrived and the man then was taken to jail by one of the officers. The officer that remained was waiting for a truck to tow the car and looked at his partners car that was behind the suspect's vehicle and couldn't see the red L.E.D. light on the dash-cam so he didn't think it was on since those little lights are suppose to never burn out. Well this one did and the cop decided to get some extra compensation and take a bundle of the dope and then rearrange the other packs so that it never looked like it was missing because the cop at first had yet to document exactly how much pot was in the car.
The stealer of the pot thought he had gotten away with it until months later a subpoena came to the first cop for an unrelated case and so he began to review his tapes to find the case in question and saw what the 2nd cop had done and now he doesn't have job and is on the other side of the bars.

Hope you all had a good laugh!

When ever we get marijuana on a call, or from a vehicle or off of a person, we take it and log it in as evidence. As far as cops smoking it, taking it home. That does not happen, there are not to many police departments any more that do not have cruiser camera's which see's everything that occurs on a call or has it recorded.

After logging it into evidence, once enough is build up it is bagged and taken to the state crime lab where they have an incinerator specifically for drugs.

They have to test it / send it to the laboratory. They then keep it until the trial (or later), after which time it is supposed to be destroyed.

Robert B
They suspose to burn it after it's served it's purpose as evidence.

Sometimes it gets destroyed but most the time the cops sell it, use it themselves or give it to their friends.
