Does anyone know what sort of jobs are available in prisions?

I think that being a warden is the highest position available in the prison system. And then, there are the guards, secretaries, and I think that prisons have teachers and doctors or nurses who work for them also.

There are the administrative jobs such as Warden and his or her assistants. There are clerical jobs in that extensive records are kept on prisoners. There are medical jobs in that some institutions hire their own staff of contract physicians from out side. There are counseling positions of all types. From psychological to social workers. These positions are to evaluate and provide treatment for the prisoners. Some systems provide education so there may even be teaching positions open. Then of course there is the old vanguard of the system; the legendary turn key or prison guard.

I will be assuming you aren't talking about license plates/inmate jobs. You can get jobs in food service, counseling, social work, secretarial, administrative, and of course - Security. It depends on your experience, what you want to do, etc. The highest job in a prison is Warden/Superintendent, followed by Deputy Wardens/Superintendents. Depending on if it's Federal, State, or County, you have various ranks of Security staff. Correction Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, etc. New York City has Correction Officer followed by Captain, which is the same as a Sergeant in the State system. The civilian jobs are broken down much the same way. You could have a cook, head cook, food service administrator, etc. Unless you have previous experience, you usually start at the bottom, and have to work your way up. Depending where you are, and what system you are thinking about going into - you will have opportunity for advancement. Good luck.

If I am not mistaken, jobs are a privilege in prison due to boredom of inmates. But like all things, these privileges are given to 'the chosen' ones and not on merit.

Don't go to work there, it is a bad place. If the inmates don't get you, the system will.

Employment in prisons are usually State & Federal Jobs. You need to take a state exam to work as a corrections officer or a clerk. A Federal exam to work in a federal prison.

the rank at a prison is different depending wish prison you go to but the worden is in charge of the prison he too has a boss....the worden job is to maintan the safety and security of staff and inmates

people that cut hair(yea seriously) or are trustees cuz they work outside of the prison...or hmmm... at a prison canteen
