I believe that the idea of probation is a good one that works. However, the system is so overcrowded and the resources are not there to adequately supervise the thousands of people on probation. My caseload right now is 350. There is no way to supervise that many people correctly. Therefore, of course, people who violate their probation have a pretty good chance of not being caught. As a result, the negative behavior is reinforced. To a lot of people, its a game. They do what they want and do everything they can to get away with it. The bottom line is that people are only going to change their lives if they want to, not because of probation, the court, etc. Because we are so busy dealing with the people who continuously violate and commit crimes and get probation over and over and over, we don't have the time to help the people that really want it. |

According to my significant other and many of their friends for the most part it doesn't work it just gives criminals a babysitter so that they can achieve the short term goals that they are expected to achieve while on probation like not violating restraining orders or not smoking weed or obtaining a high school diploma. This is stuff that they should want to do for themselves but they need a probation officer in their behind to motivate them to do it. |
