It obviously depends on the department.
Some will put you through their academy and pay you to go.
Some will send you to an academy and pay you.
Some will send you to an academy and pay your way.
Some will hire people who have already been through an academy on their own dollar. |

Some will, some won't. It depends on their budget and how badly they need positions filled.
I work for a State department and they sent me through, but a lot of my local depts. wouldn't. Plus, with the economy the way it is, a lot of departments aren't putting anyone through, let alone hiring. |

I would say yes. There is also the option called alternate route. Which is where you pay for your training, and select a department of your choice. Will cost you in the ballpark of $2000 or more where I come from.
If a department pays for your training, they pay you as you train. You are considered employed, but you must pass your training or you can be terminated.
After academy training and graduation, they place you with a field training officer. This is when the job becomes fun. Until you get as much time as I have had and you can't wait to retire lol. |

yeah just find an agency that is willing to hire you and they will sponsor you to go to the academy...some agency even have their own academy. |
