Hello,
This may be a silly question but I would like to find out now before going through the process. My fiance has a record no felonies but misdemeanors such as: domestic violence, gun charges, third degree assault. If we get married will this effect me from becoming a police officer? If so is there anything I could do about it? Thanks

As a general rule, misdemeanors do not count , but you mentioned domestic violence. Slick Willy made it a Federal law to place all domestic violence convictions under Weapons Under Disability (18 U.S.C. 922), which states a person under this disability cannot own, possess purchase or be in a household that has firearms.
If you go on the job, you will be required to carry your sidearm home with you. This places both of you in jeopardy.
Best and only advice is to check with the department and let them know the convictions involved. They will be able to advise you as to what you may or may not do.

This is a real touchy question. Police departments frown on it's officers consorting with criminals. I would reconsider possible marriage to this man in view of the types of crimes that he has committed. |

It will have an effect. It shows your character being with someone who has made these choices and not being offended enough to not be with them. Sorry. Keep in mind if you apply and are turned down you will also not be able to apply for other law enforcement agencies either. |

The short answer to this is yes. It will have some effect on your hiring, but may not on it's own exclude you. If the DV incidents in the history involved you, even as a victim it shows you may have a questionable past of your own, and reflect poorly on life's choices and judgment calls you may have made. |
