Well, it depends. In most (not all) places they do if you call from a landline. In those places they may have a location if you're calling from a cell phone (since most cell phones sold in the last five years DO hav GPS aboard) but may not (in case of a phone not so equipped, or a phone that has that function disabled, or a phone that can't see enough of the sky to get a fix) or it may be off by several blocks.

The technology is called E-911. It means enhanced 911. It shows the dispatch center the calling number, who the phone line belongs to, and the address where the phone line is located. The data is known as ALI and ANI data and is sent as soon as the call is connected. This is the case is most areas of the country.

Most cell phones and carriers have this also, but as there is no fixed location, they use gps satellites to locate the phone. In order for the satellite to "see" the phone it needs line of sight. Meaning if you are using the cell phone inside a building, in a tunnel, or if there is some other obstruction, the satellite cannot see you and give the dispatcher your location.

Yes, they do already have that information. The only way they don't is if it is via a cell phone.

If you dial 911 and hang up, they'll either call back, or have a cop show up at your house to see if there is a problem.

If it's a landline, yes, the number shows up on their screens. They don't show locations for cell phones, since most of them don't have GPS.

Edit: If you don't think the number shows up, how about doing an experiment, and making a prank call to 911 from your house?

if ur on a landline yes u can but if ur on a cell fone they cant cause ur constantly traveling with it so they cant track it thats y they ask u where they u are at
