Driving abroad whilst banned in the UK?

Hi All,

I have tried researching this for a while now, and not getting very far.

If you are banned from driving in the UK (for 50 days), are you permitted to hire a car abroad?

Most websites are saying you can't because you won't be able to show your photocard, however I still have my licence and they returned it to me. Other websites are saying that local police laws abroad have no access to DVLA records, and therefore a ban in the UK is not necessarily a ban in the rest of Europe. Only if your licence was revoked, then you would no longer have any licence.

The only Countries with mutual recognition of penalty points and driving bans are The Irish Republic, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.

Other EU countries are yet to come into line, therefore, you can drive on mainland Europe.

For a ban of less than 56 days, your licence should be stamped with info re the ban and returned to you.

You may have difficulty hiring a car outside the UK with this stamp on your licence, but currently you are allowed to drive.

jeff is wrong... a driving ban is for the uk only.. you could drive in southern ireland if you like... and anywhere in europe...
wheather renting a car will be possible with the points on your licence is another thing....

You have one licence, that has been invalidated for 50 days, therefore you cannot drive legally on an invalid licence.

if your full licence allowed you to drive in any specific country then that ban will apply there. If you manage to rent one then you will be illegally driving without insurance

I think you know the answer, Your research has got you no clear answer and your relying on our answers to give you an excuse to drive abroad.

If you want to know LEGALLY what your ban's terms are, then you would do the right thing and contact DVLA and ask them the question and you would get the right answer.

It's likely to be a NO.

If your banned that's it,Driving a car whilst being banned will invalidate your insurance.In any country.

If you have been banned from driving then technically for the duration of that ban you do not hold a licence entitling you to drive. Just because you have a licence in your hand does not mean it is valid.
If you do decide to drive abroad and have an accident or get a ticket etc, then enquiries can be made by them with DVLA direct as to the validity of your licence. They can pick up a phone, does not have to be a computer access like over here.

a driving ban in the UK applies to ALL european countries.

If you should be chance be able to rent a car, it is highly likely that you will be driving it illegally and with no insurance until the ban expires.

If you are banned from driving in the UK you are banned to drive anywhere. That they haven given your physical licence back doesnt matter. You probably could rent a car, but if you woul get stopped by the police and they check your licence in the cental system, they will probably take your license off you, and you'll have to go to court in that country, expect a massive fine (prob overÂ£1000)and you'll loose your license for at least a year
Plus your insurance wouldnt be valid as you are driving without a valid license

Those that are supplying duff info take note If you are banned in the UK you are only banned in the UK or those colonies under UK jurisdiction. You can obtain an International licence from DVLA and this will entitle you to drive abroad.
