During a gun battle, will the firefighters show up on the scene...?
|
You know how some paramedics won't enter in the 'hot zone', but will the firefighters will, like while the gun battle is still going on, to help wounded officers/bystanders etc.? Additional Details (sigh) You know, firefighters don't just respond to fire calls only..........

No, and fire fighters and paramedics are generally the same agency in most cities. If you see a fire fighter he's probably also a paramedic or at least E.M.T., and vice versa.
Neither should show up on a scene until the scene has been secured by law enforcement, and no agency in the U.S. would expect or want them to. If a gun battle is going on, no one but police should enter.
It simply increases the number of potential casualities for the overall EMS system in the area to have to cope with once the dust settles.
Rarely an exception will be made if a victim is a cop or firefighter/EMT, a soldier, something like that... 'professional courtesy', if they're the kind of person who would go into a gunfight to save you, you risk going into save them. Even more rare is a situation where you can excercise individual judgement (say a person is injured just inside the area you're told not to go in, and the area appears safe), but you're accountble for it later.
However that's the individual medics or fire fighters call in both cases, and is generally NOT advised and will occasionally lead to disciplinary action if it gets made public or is documented in a way their superiors find out. Mostly because more often then not, it just ends up making the situation worse (even if you save the victim, you're now one more person the already taxed officers in the fire fight have to watch).
First rule of First response... Scene Safety. Don't do the job, or be in the way of doing the job, of what is another professionals purview. If their is a fire it's usually best for police/medics to stay out and not risk just becoming a casualty. If their is someone dying, medics get priority and firefighters/police have to do what they say. If their is a gun fight, well, that's when the police are in charge and generally they don't want you in the line of fire until they're done and tell you to go in. |

Usually not until the scene is secure. Police are trained as First Responders, and if there is a gun battle, chances are there will be a Special Tactics team there, and they will have a medic on site. |

Carlos has it. Firefighters and paramedics will stage in an area far enough away to ensure safety. They will not enter until the police have secured the scene. If the injured require immediate attention, police officers will have to extract them from the fight and transport them to the staging area.
Following the 1999 bank shootout in LA, LAPD has been developing tactics to address this exact issue. |

During a "gun battle" (or any violent situation), both the paramedics and the firefighters stay away from the situation, until the police have it resolved. We don't have the kind of training to deal with law enforcement situations, and we're absolutely no good to anyone if we rush in while the scene is unsafe, and get shot ourselves! My ambulance company actually forbids me to enter a potentially violent scene, until the police give the OK. At the end of the day, we all want to go home in one piece.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, and occasional firefighters and paramedics have been known to violate rules of safety and rush in to help...sometimes, this is even appropriate in certain situations (although they are rare situations).
Hope this helps... |

Depends on the situation and level of training. There are "swat" trained paramedics in some municipalities, though firefighters and paramedics usually have standard operating guidelines that require police to secure the scene prior to entry. But if an officer or citizen is down/in trouble (depends on the situation), firefighters and paramedics may due what they have to do to rescue the officer or citizen. Policeofficers/firefighters/paramedics depend on each other day in and day out, watching each other's back. |
