Hello.
I currently work a retail job and I'm sick of it. I want to get out there and do something good. First thing that popped in my mind was to be a police officer. I know its not the highest paid job, but that's not my incentive. I like the action part of it, and meanwhile you're doing good for your community.
My question is, what would I have to do to get there? Police academy? I would really like to be in a patrol car. Is there any other kind of training for that?

Your first stop will have to be at your local agencies to see if they are even hiring. Next you'll have to get their requirements for being hired. Then you get to apply and if accepted, take their tests. If you pass their tests, then you get to go to the police academy. At the academy you get to take a whole bunch more tests. If you pass the academy you get to go into field training. Guess what? More tests. If you pass field training, you get your first patrol assignment in a patrol car, maybe solo, maybe double. But guess what? You get reviewed and scrutinized for a probationary period during which you can be let go just because they decide they don't like you. So if that all sounds fun to you, happy trails, get after it.

mmm an associates degree in criminal justice wouldn't hurt your cause, and would give you a better chance in being aproved... why not the Military though, and apply for an MP |

You need to apply with the the department you want to work for, and they put you through the academy if you are hired. There are city police departments and county sheriff's departments. A criminal justice degree or military experience would give you an edge in getting hired. You could also consider the Border Patrol. They are hiring many people right now. |
