I am a renter at a condo building in Florida. From the time I moved into this complex the building manager has been making up stuff to complain about that isn't true (cat box smell when there is none) and calling the owner of my unit repeatedly to lodge these fictitious complaints about me. I have heard from other residents here and the owners of my unit that this woman is trouble, that she is always in everyone's business and that others have had trouble with her too. I am only a renter, not an owner, and don't know if I have any rights to press charges against her. I found her trying to look in my front windows twice, the last time being yesterday, she is scaring me and I cannot relax or enjoy myself because every single time I encounter her outside she finds a reason to call the owners and complain for nothing. I have notified the owners that I am tired of the harassment and defamation of my character and contacted the police, who suggested I have a report made. Any little thing enflames this woman, who is highly excitable and always looking for conflict. I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't. I know nothing of condo politics but was told by another resident that she and another woman have been harrassing him, too, in the past, and he nearly sued them. I don't want to have to take this to court or to be evicted for complaining. Does anyone have any suggestions? Her accusations are unfounded and the owners of my unit know this, I want to keep them out of the craziness, as they don't need the extreme stress either. Help.

I would imagine that she is put off by renters and thus creates drama to discourage owners from renting their units.
Some people cannot exist without drama, so when there is none, they create some.
You cannot be evicted for complaining.
Write a really nice letter to the owners explaining your position. Ask them to address the matter with the condo board. This nutball is hired by and works for the condo board. They can straighten her out. She needs to have her limits and boundaries made clear.
The owners of your unit need to address this as they stand to lose a good renter and incur a lot of inconvenience and loss of income as a result. It is in their best interest to set this woman straight by complaining to the condo board immediately.
Find out what rights you do have an a renter. This would be detailed in the condo association's bylaws. You would not have a vote as a renter, but you may have a voice. As a resident, it would seem that you should be given the opportunity to speak.
As long as the owners of the unit know that she's a crackpot, you have no claim of defamation. It sounds like everybody knows she's nuts, so her accusations do not affect your reputation. She does however annoy and harrass you and that's got to stop.
When you write to the owners and/or address the condo board, be brief and to the point. Offer bulleted, factual points that support your claim. Do not address her psychiatric status; merely give facts that will allow others to draw their own conclusions. Be sure to include the fact that you have had to call the police and that you have filed a police report. That sort of activity does not bode favorably for any condo community. |

You need to contact the head of the HOA and lodge complaints or
call the PD everytime shes looking in your window, immediately take her picture as proof, have a camera sitting there and do a test pic to make sure the camera will capture her looking in.
Carry a small tape recorder in your pocket, take it out, push the button and say do you mind I tape this, my owner wishes to hear how you treat me and so do the police, if she says no, turn it off and get away from her asap and say, no tape recorder, no conversations then.
I would ask her sometime if there are rules regarding putting up a security camera at the front door, say your tired of the harrassment and false accusations and want everything on tape so your owners can see who is doing what and who is saying what too.
Wear shades and earphones every time you leave and never look you since you cant see or hear her. |
