well i would say most of them dont know the driver who killed you son (btw-so sorry) but i saw its either one of these two reasons
they truly dont know the name
or out of total respect not to upset you

Maybe because they know that you're going to get depressed and probably stressed up. I'm sorry. Also, because they know that once you find out or they tell you, every sons father would wanna kill that person and obviously the investigators and police officers dont wanna cause more violence. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your son.
Maybe they don't know who the person was that did it. If you don't know and the police don't know, then maybe they really don't know either.
I mean no disrespect to you when I say this. But just because they are saying R.I. P. to your son that doesn't mean that they know who killed your son. They are only saying for your son to (R.I.P.) rest in peace and that is all.
I pray that the police will find out who killed your son, and that person will pay for what they have done. Maybe it will help you to be able to deal with some of your loss and the pain that you are going through.
