I've heard that you need to be a police officer before you become a S.W.A.T. member. I was wondering, what would be the best area to join in the police for this? I would think that highway patrol wouldn't be as helpful as a patrol officer. What are the other areas that give you the best experience for S.W.A.T.?

I meant, what job within the category of "police" would give the best experience? Would S.W.A.T. like me better if I was a K-9 officer, a detective, a patrol officer, highway patrol, something else?

Everybody starts in patrol. You will have to become proficient there before you are eligible for special assignments like K-9, SWAT, or the detective bureau.
Some state police agencies have SWAT teams, others are primarily concerned just with traffic safety. |

Of course you have to be an Officer. SWAT is just a small part of your job.
EDIT: It makes no difference which area you are in. As long as you can pass the SWAT tests then its all good. |
