Maybe you're looking in the wrong direction. It's Fathers day, not Police Officers day. Let him know how much you appreciate him.

Put together an engraved plaque of some sort, I'm sure there are places you can call to have it done.

Have your kids write something short and sweet then add your part.. He's a hero in more ways than one, and to many people. Get him something that will remind him of that :) Kind of like the best dad award, husband, and hero award all in one.

What about a picture of you and your children for his locker or his hat? Many of the officers that I know will keep a photo of their family in the band of their hat. I couldn't think of a more "Father's Day" appropriate gift.

Does he like chocolate? There are some really easy and delicious chocolate candy recipes that you could choose from and the 3 year old could even help. You may even want to consider using chocolate candy molds in a particular shape that suits his interests. Just a suggestion, have that smith checked out. I read a bulletin that that model could have problems by cracking at the back. It can only be seen by taking the gun apart. Tell him to have his dept range officers check it. If it is damaged smith will pay for repair, shipping etc. As far as the gift, you don't need to limit it to police stuff, cops have all sorts of extra crap and there is probably nothing he needs. Maybe go in another direction. Good luck.

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about the kids. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

Wow...you could get him a special shirt made. Something like a family inside joke on it. What about movies? Or if he has an iPod/Mp3 player you could get him a card that money on it so he can download some new songs for it.

Why don't you get tickets to some kind of event he wanted to see? Or maybe a gift card to his favorite store? Or why don't you ask him what he wants? A grill, fishing stuff. Does he like any sports teams? How about wake him up on Father's day with his favorite breakfast and then ask him what he wants to do?

that is indeed a tough decision. every officer has a favorite place to shop for his hobby or job related items. just get him a gift certificate and he can make his own choice

I think my wife was in your position last year. She just took me out for dinner at my favorite steak house. I appreciated the night out with the wife more than a new gadget.

Personally I'd look into getting him a new vest if he doesn't already have a great one. Most Police Depts supply vests but they're not very good, I even know of some departments that make the officer buy their own vests. To me that's just wrong, really wrong.

I ordered a holster from simply rugged about a year and half ago. 3 months later the holster came, wrong holster, wrong gun, shoddy workmanship, lack of communication, refused to give me a refund or the right holster. STAY AWAY
