Frauded check. I got scammed. will I go to jail?

I live in washington state and have no criminal offenses what so ever. I got a 2000 dollar check about 3 weeks ago from a college. I called the college and they told me to go ahead and cash it. so I did. I got a call today (about 3 weeks later) from the place that cashed the check and said it came back with no funds to fullfill the check. so I got scammed! I have no problem paying the money back, as soon as I get a job. But with this info what im wondering is is it likley they will do more to me then make me pay back the funds?

By your description of the problem, you got scammed.

You probably got a check and were instructed to send some of the money back to the sender (in Canada)? Did you initiate any action to obtain the check?

The bank doesn't care about your financial situation. They will destroy your credit unless you pay the money back immediately. If you don't pay it back, they could take you to court for check fraud. It was your check, you cashed it, your problem. Sorry.

Ok - I'm missing something here. _Why_ did you cash the check?

Not only did you get scammed..but you can also be held liable. Always check with authorities like BBB to check up on businesses like those. Sounds like a "Boiler room operation" to me.
