off so as not to attract attention? I chained the mower, bikes and snowblower into one pile - but tools are loose and my security light (auto sensor) is broken- repair coming soon for garage.
Additional Details
There is no lowering the door - Springs are EXTREMELY broken and must be repaired - if I shut it we may never get it open w/o sawing it off, so no latch release will help. Also , there is no access door on the side. It's an OLD garage. TY

If it's electric pop the pin out of the release lever & lower the door. Or Install a redneck security system:
1) Huge dog dishes with the name "killer" emblazoned on them.
2) Big honkin' chain with big, spiked collar attached.
3) Prodigious amount of bloodstains.
4) Empty shell casings scattered around.

Works for me!

lights off - don't facilitate window-shopping of your possessions.

ok well they always have a lever where you could release the garage door from the opener where you can open it manually and close it too! it should be either in the middle or on the sides somewhere! it has to be there unless it was the first garage door ever!

I say you should keep the lights on, because if somebody comes along and trys to steal something, and see the ligths, they will think that you are working or something. Plus, theifs never like the light! Good Luck!

You did the right thing by securing the big stuff. A good idea would be to take a video of the garage for insurance purposes as well, documenting all belongings.

I agree with the poster regarding keeping the interior lights off and exteriors on. No need to issue a personal invite. If you don't have a dog, consider borrowing one from a friend. Thieves dont like alert systems like that. Too much barking at 2 am brings the cops because it irritates the neighbors and it wakes you up....too much risk.

Have you considered getting some sheets of plywood to create a temp barricade until you fix the door? Depending on the timeframe for repair, it may not be a bad idea. Cuts access but may save you a headache.

WTF
Leave the lights on and walk outside every now and then. If you could keep a dog outside that would be even better.

I'd leave the lights inside the garage off, and any others that shine into the garage. Other than this, I'd turn on as many outside lights as possible. The objective is to create as deep a shadow as possible on the garage. That way, a potential thief can't clearly see whether or not the door's open. He'll also have to cross well lit areas to get to the garage (if he knows it's open at all) Punks tend to go for the easiest targets, so the tougher ya make it for em, the less likely they'll bother trying.

above the door is a way to detach it all and close your door.....don't leave it open.

If you leave the lights on they will rob you blind.

sleep in there with a shotgun in the dark

there should be a "release" cord or latch on the track. Almost all garage door systems have this feature in case of problems or for manual operation.

ear help!
Get as many tools into the house for the night as you are able to. I'd leave the lights on because it gives the impression someone is working there and could be coming back any minute. As well, I'd leave a few lights on in the kitchen (or whatever room is visible from the same side) to give the impression that someone is awake and would hear any noise.

Good luck, hope you don't get robbed.

Actually, lights now-a-days don't repel thieves. If you leave the lights on, it may attract them. They can see what you have and they can also see that no one is there. If the lights are off, then they don't know what's there.

Good luck!

I suppose it depends on the type of neighborhood you live in, but I leave my garage door open all the time (I'm sometimes forgetful when I come home for work) and leave my door unlocked to the garage and I never had issues with anyone coming into my garage.....but then again I leave in fairly safe neighborhood. *shrug* I suppose you could leave the light on, but what will you do during the day when you're at work...it will be obvious that your door is open/stuck. So is it really worth the electricity to leave it on all night? I think if someone wanted to steel stuff from your garage they will do it whether the lights on or not.

NEway I don't think it would that convincing when it's like 3am on a Wednesday morning...
