Every state is different, as well as the age of the participants, the crime committed (or it can go under many different names) the amount, who it involved (a person or a business, and even a school!). You have to be specific. I'll give you an easy example, here in Los Angeles for example. Welfare fraud, if it's over the amount of $400.00, it's considerd a felony by the Dept. of Public Social Services. Meaning, you go in and claim that you NEVER received your check. Once they receive the stolen one, right along with the replacement one that they gave you, you'll do fingerprints, handwriting samples, pictures taken and have to do a statement, why there's more than one check involved. Of course, the investigators will ask you if you owe the person money, how your relationship was with the person and you have to cooperate or else, you'll be charged. That was like eons ago, when that happened. But, you asked for an example. |
