Good martial arts for police officers.?

I am a Cadet right now for a local police department, I have my heart set on being a police officer and I want to get into some good self defense classes. I read a lot on yahoo answers about the different types of self defenses, so far I have narrowed it down to Aikido, Hapkido, and Jiu Jitsu. The only thing I am worried about is that Aikido and Hapkido don't look too practical, but I know nothing about Martial Arts so I might be wrong. Can someone who is in the Law Enforcement business help me choose which route to chose? Thanks a lot guys!

I am a D.T. instructor in California and train officers in U.S.A. Aiki Jiu Jitsu. Just as it sounds, it is a mix between Akido and Jiu Jitsu designed by police officers for police officers. All three of your choices are good but teach different skill sets. Aikido doesn't look practical put it does teach you wrist/twist locks which officers use daily. Jui Jitsu is great for ground control and submissions; The skills it teaches are vital to know but low frequency of use. I suggest you do some self evaluation and do whatever you need the most training in.

Stay away from striking styles of martial arts. While this is good to know, it is the least practical for law enforcment and may lead to poor choices while in the field when you fall back on your muscle memory and punch/kick someone when you should be placing them in a control hold and taking them into custody. It was designed for military use so it has strong attack and defense without all of the high-flying acrobatics that look great in the movies but don't work too good in real life.
