You should have been served with a Notice of intended prosecution (NIP) within 14 days of the offence. Failure to do this makes the ticket illegal.

Under UK police law the ticket is invalid if it is not issued within 14 days from date of offence, so you must not pay up. Stand your ground and contest it.

just go to court and pay the fine you should not have run that red light. because even though you didn't say that's what it was, that is about the only thing thety would send a ticket thru the mail for.
