This has already happened in Canada. We had a gun registry enacted after which all who registered were informed as to which guns they could keep and which ones had to be destroyed. The government made a fortune out of this and we all went to bed knowing that we were safe because all the bad guns were gone..

The criminal element did not comply (BIG SURPRISE) and street guns are more prevalent that they have ever been.

I used to be a proponent of gun control. Not anymore. It is just a waste of taxpayers money. More would have been accomplished if they had plowed the money into more police on the streets. As it stands now we can't even walk the streets at night and now these bozos are starting to shoot up the streets during the day too.

The moment the government tries to confiscate rightfully owned guns from law abiding citizens is the moment those law abiding citizens must rally together to form resistance to tyranny as expressed by the 2nd Amendment and start overthrowing the government. It is the best way to stop the horror of tyranny before it can even begin. Because once people are unarmed and cannot fight, they are 100% susceptible to what tyranny does: kill innocent people.

So the day some cops or government agents come to my house to try and take my guns, I will hand over my weapons BULLETS first. Then I would help fellow Americans arm themselves and prepare for the next revolution.

In other terms, the government WILL NOT take guns away from law abiding citizens without battles.

In other countries gun registration has been used as a means to identify the guns that are in the hands of private individuals and the storage locations of those guns.

The next step was to contact the registered owners and tell them to turn in their guns or face criminal penalties.

Unfortuanately in the past in other countries where this was tried, criminal violence increased.

The reason is that now the law abiding citizens did not have the means to protect themselves from criminals.

The criminals, knowing that private citizens were now disarmed, had a field day.

Criminals buy their guns illegally so gun laws have no effect on them.

Guns are smuggled into a country as easily as drugs are smuggled.

When guns are banned, the value of guns to criminals goes up.

the result of a ban on guns will be an increase in the smuggling of guns into the country for criminals to buy.

We have never succeed in preventing drigs from being smuggled into the country.

There is no reason to expect that we would be successful in preventing guns from being smuggled into the country.

As it is fully automatic macihine guns are smuggled into the country for drug dealers to use to protect their turf.

We have never been able to prevent the smuggling of fully automatic machine guns to keep them out of the hands of drug dealers.

It is not likely that we would have any success at preventing smuggling of any other type of firearm.

They can't legally collect up all the guns, as in going to your house and asking for all of your guns.

I personally think that gun control is a pointless endeavor. Think about it. Lets say that Obama makes all simi-auto rifles (aka black guns) illegal to sell. The ONLY people who will get those simi-auto guns that they want will be criminals. The people who don't break any laws will be without the good guns, while the bad guys get the good guns the same way they always have: Illegally.

As we move closer toward a socialist/communist government under Barak Hussein Obama, they may try to do exactly that. After all, they will not be able to put into force most of their radical agenda if the citizens are armed.

It is one of the first moves necessary for that form of government to solidify its power to disarm the citizens. Otherwise, as they try to implement, the people will stand up against them.

It isn't likely that Obama could ban guns. He would have to create some crisis to justify his infringement on our rights. It would have to be "for our protection" that we lose our rights. This is not inconceivable. That is how Bush got the Patriot Act, which authorizes illegal phone taps and infringes on our right to privacy, and against unreasonable search & seizure. It would be an extreme move, and I don't anticipate it happening in the next 4 years.

The so-called "assault weapons" ban is likely to get approved. This is interesting since there is no such thing as an assault weapon. Congress created the term, and applied their own definition to it. They could say they are going to ban teddy bear ticklers, and it would have the same meaning. Before anyone yells, yes I know about assault rifles. These are military weapons capable of automatic fire, and are not available to the general public. "Assault Weapons" are hunting rifles styled to look like military rifles, but with no special killing capability.

Bookish makes a decent argument, but has a couple of logic flaws. The SCOTUS did not say we could arm ourselves to the teeth. They said that the second amendment is an individual right, but the govenrment can still institute sensible controls. I can't see how you think this is wrong. Further, you are reading the second amendment backwards. You don't need to be in a militia to get a gun, you need a gun to form a militia. The founding fathers wanted people armed so that the government could call upon them in times of need.

Obama, by himself, can't "ban" all guns, as great an idea as that might be. The "government," whoever you think that is, cannot round up all the guns. It would be interesting to see our gun death numbers drop like a stone if they did, but it would not be legal for anyone to do this.
The Supreme Court has said, wrongly, in my opinion, that Americans can arm themselves to the teeth. Don't worry.
Edit: You don't have to like my opinion, but the facts are correct. You needn't worry about Obama or the big, bad government taking away your firearms. I am interested if any of you belong to a "well-regulated militia," the part of the Second Amendment you tend to ignore.
And, Dom, nobody did more to erode Constitutional rights than the past eight years of Bush/Cheney rule. The only amendment they cared about was the 2nd. They trampled all over the First Amendment and a few others as well.
