Handcuffs hurt!?

Handcuffs hurt!?

i was out on saturday night at a nightclub in town and got into a fight with my boyfriends ex girlfriend. It was just outside the club and before i knew it police were involved and split us up. I was then handcuffed behind my back very tight by a female officer and put me in the police car.

on the way to the station i asked if she would loosen my cuffs a bit because they were digging into my wrist, so the officer in the back seat with me checked the cuffs and loosened them a bit, but they were still way too tight!

it wasnt until i got to the station the cuffs were taken off and i looked at my wrists which were red marked nd really sore, so the nurse checked them for any bone breaks etc, but luckily i was ok!

i showed my wrists to the officer who arrested me and she said.. she had them tight because my hand was thin and she didnt want me slipping out of them!

anyway, i didnt think i should have been handcuffed at all!

what do u think of this?!!

xx

The problem with handcuffs, they are designed to restrict movement, not for comfort.

It is not natural to sit with your hands behind your back, there is pressure on your shoulders, and tends to push against your wrists, causing the discomfort.

No matter how loose they were, metal does not stretch, so as your weight pushes against you as you sit, they are going to dig in.

As far as you being handcuffed at all, most every department has a policy mandating handcuffing of arrested persons. Those that are allowed discretion rarely use it. People's attitudes change in a hurry, especially when they are all ready pumped up from a fight. Discretion is difficult to justify, you will always be asked "why did I get handcuffed when he didn't". The safe thing is to handcuff them all.

I think if you don't like handcuffs, you should do all you can to stay out of them. Most people do.
They aren't built for comfort, they are built to keep out of control people who get in fights in public under control.
You don't get to decide if you are cuffed or not. Your decision making ended when you chose to get into a fight.

What I always tell the complainers

I think anyone that is arrested should be handcuffed. Even if a suspect is very cooperative and passive, things can change is a heartbeat.

If you have small hands the cuffs will likely be put on tighter.

If you were arrested for fighting you have already shown that you are willing to do violence.

I think that people that behave themselves rarely end up with handcuffs on. The only time I have had them on was during Navy Shore Patrol Training.

I think that its proper procedure and if you did not want to get handcuffed you should not have gotten in a stupid fight outside of the club.

As said before not made for comfort. If you have small wrists, the chance is there that you could slip out of it. Just because you had the red marks still doesn't mean it is to tight. Think about it, your arms are naturally trying to go back to the original position and the cuffs are stopping you. No matter how loose they are it will still feel like it is tight.

Suggestion, stay out of cuffs!!! Only time I have been in them is for training purposes.

I think it's fair.

Back of Police Car = Handcuffs end of story.

You could complain on how they kicked you *** as well.

Handcuffs are not made for comfort. I suggest not taking part in street fights, and you will most likely not end up in handcuffs.

The real simple question to this answer is don't get arrested in the first place. There have been many recorded occurrences of people slipping out of handcuffs and assaulting police officers, some were even killed. Yes, they do hurt, and yes officers know they hurt because we have to have them put on in training. We don't do it on purpose, it is simply the officer trying to protect himself, and believe it or not, you.

Handcuffs are not made for comfort, but are used to transport suspects safely. Handcuffing a suspect is standard operating procedure. Try to stay out of trouble.

Handcuffs hurt...period, no matter how loose they are.

I have yet to handcuff someone who didn't complain about them. The red marks are normal and happen often. They go away within a couple of hours.

Handcuffing suspects is standard procedure for most police departments (for officer safety reasons). People can change from passive to violent in a heartbeat, I've seen it time and time again. If you are under arrest and in my cruiser, you are handcuffed.

I know the feeling. I think female officers seem to like applying handcuffs tight. I was arrested a while back by a female officer, and my cuffs were way to tight also, but she would not loosen them. I had marks for a week. About the only thing you can do in a situation like that is try not to move much and struggle in the cuffs. I know it is hard to to when you are seatbelted in the back of a cruiser in tight cuffs. To add insult to injury, she also chained my legs together with leg irons, so don't feel bad. I know how you feel.

Yeah... I guess cops who get what they provoked a citizen to do against them fit into the excuses you heard here too!

sounds par for the course. that's what cops do.

im glad I was ok because i got into a fight with another student and the police locked me up and the handcuffs was so tight that it messed up my wrist. they took me upstairs to the office and finally took the handcuffs off and I had a bruise
