Has anyone ever used an Airsoft gun for firearms training?

I'm looking for something to practice self-defense type shooting (about 5 yards range). Does anyone know of any Airsoft guns on the market that are accurate and that deliver consistent velocities?
Additional Details
If you have experience with this I'd really appreciate it if you would include a specific gun recommendation. Thanks!

There are many problems with using anything but the weapon (or a exact size, shape, weight replica) you plan to go into combat with as a training tool... it will not prepare you for the real thing.

When your life is on the line, you don't want ot be thinking... is this the safety, or is that where I put fresh batteries in?

Furthermore, the "kick" from an airgun will not accurately reflect that of a real gun, so your aim would be totally off...

Get a real gun, buy some cheap wad cutter ammo, practice, practice, practice... when you start getting good, spend a few Extra bucks on some nice corbon or other SD ammo and practice with that (just a few rounds, to make sure it is consistent with how you were shooting with the wad cutters).

There is no substitute for the real thing, and since this is a game of life and death (when guns are involved), why bring the wrong equipment to practice?

You don't use a nerf football in training for the nfl, why use one when you are training to protect your life?

No that is just a toy for a child less than a daisy bb gun. A P shooter has more punch

USE A PELLET GUN. THEY ARE MORE LIKE REAL GUNS AND MUCH BETTER

don't buy airsoft. i just read today that they can only shoot like 200 fps. that's kind of shatty! go with something that has a little more kick if you're serious about using the words training and self defense.

Okay, some of the posters are idiotic and I have no clue what in the world they are talking about. Don't listen to them.

Yes, people use airsoft for firearms training. Some SWAT teams do, as well as police/civilians/what not.

If you're just looking for a pistol, KWA makes some great ones. The glock series would have been perfect for you, but they had to stop selling them due to Glock being mean towards them. If you can find a used one that would be good, but if not, just go for another KWA gun. You can get some off www.airsoftatlanta.com. The gas guns are what I'm talking about. (not "air powered"). My Glock has a nice kick to it for being airsoft, as well as it is pretty accurate. Just go for an m9 or one of the "KP" series. Or you can pick out a KJW gun there.

For rifles, it all depends on your budget. Echo1 guns for low budget, classic army/ICS/marui for high budget.

Of course theres a lot more to this all I'm just trying to give you the basics.

Message me if you need more help.

These answers are ludacris. I have seen them made out of metal and powered by LP gas and they kick too, at least so much as the slide functioning allows. Look for air powered as they tend to be more consistant in velocity as opposed to spring that get weak, which goes for electric too.
Ive also seen them where they have bits of concrete in them to have proper heft AND balance to real guns. They are getting pretty insane. You can get them to your specific gun model too so your safety(or lack thereof) are all in the right places, at least for common models.
Id say check an airfsoft forum and be honest, tell them its for firearm safety and training. They will probably love it. Good luck

for shooting practice, no. for squad movement and command, we sure do!!

the US Military I believe uses Systema PTW (Professional Training Weapon) for CQB training. you may look it up in youtube.

An airsoft gun would not be a good substitute for a real firearm for practicing self-defense shooting. They generally weigh a lot less than a real firearm, and have virtually no kick.
