Has anyone received a fine in the uk for throwing a cigarette tab out of a car window?

not just the UK... it is basically most of Europe.... be very wary about things that we in America take for granted...... and besides that, it is considered littering in the United States also.... it is just one of those laws that is so overlooked that there becomes a complacient feeling about it..... KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL... PUT YOUR BUTTS IN THE CAN....

i no longer smoke..but when travelling from newcastle to liverpool with a friend from college ..she was a right stresshead...chain smoking and swearing all the way..i gave in and had a cig....hated smoking in confined spaces even then...went to throw the cig out of the window doing 70 on the motorway..could have been faster.....xcept i hadnt actually opened the window..it was nov and freezing..burnt my brand new newcastle top....never forgiven her..it was her fault,,if she hadnt transferred stress to me

I wish I could say poor old you but I can't. One of the reasons that I want to see smoking off the streets is this appaling habit of litter. Unfortunately the people who smoke are not the highest IQ's so do not understand being fined a set amount which has been a law for some time. You ask what you do? You pay it and stop throwing your junk around

A woman in Congleton got caught with that one and yes it was a Â£75 fine. It was in all the local papers

I got fined for dropping one down a drain Â£50 quid for that one thou it was 2yrs ago so has prob gone up since then gotta say i havent dropped one anywhere ever since doesnt matter how small or large the object its an instant fixed fine apparently

Wow, I don't know about the UK but in Washington State the fine is $1025.00.

It's dangerous to throw a lit cigarette out but you can also be fined for throwing litter out of a car window so even if it wasn't still burning you would be in trouble. I'm left handed so I'm nearer the ashtray than the window so its easier for me to remember not to throw it out of the window. I know what my husband did when he got caught! Cursed himself for being stupid and paid his fine. I think that litter is such an eye-sore and I'd accept the punishment I deserved for adding to the problem. If you can't do the time don't do the crime!

Recently I took my son to burger king and was in my car happily driving along. I pulled up at the traffic lights and sat waiting. My son opened the window and stupidly threw the corner tab of plastic that measures about 3mm by 1mm and is the corner of the little sauces you get and the police car sat behind me drove like a nutter up besides me as the lights changed and bibbed his horn and was shouting from his car. I almost crashed as his car got so close he almost took off my wing mirror and i had to go up the pavement so he didnt hit me. I opened my window and he was shouting at me for my son throwing the tab out of the window. He gave me a verbal warning although he originally wanted to give me a fine but the plastic was so tiny the policeman couldnt find it. I was so shocked what he done that i waited half hour before I drove home. That was harlow police.

I know of a friend who got pulled over for speeding.. and his mate in the back of the car flicked a *** butt out of the window.. and the driver got fined as it was out of his car !!!

Yes. Somebody in Corby, Northants got busted for the same thing recently with about the same fine. Not much you can do when the Thought Police report you (it wasn't me and the guy got ratted on by a traffic warden)

No way - I can't use my ash tray cos it is full of old parking fines - where else can I put my ciggies out? I will have to start bringing my own ash tray when I am out and about because I might get fines for flicking my ash on the floor. Looks like time to give up - it is getting ridiculous.

I have an even more distressing story. Whilst I appreciate the views from all sides on smoking, my experience, I feel takes this one to a new level. I got in my car in the car part at the railway station in West Lothian Scotland. I drove off (and lit a cigarette). A mile down the road I noted a white vehicle with two burly men inside who appeared to be following me (I am a woman in a car on my own). Thinking it might be the police - albeit the vehicle branding stated Network Gas - I stayed rigidly within the speed limit. The vehicle tailed me all the way to my home, where when I got out of my car in the drive, I was confronted by the two burly men who advised they were Environmental Officer here to fine me for littering. Is it legal, moral or advisable for Council employees (two men) to follow a woman on her own, tail her car, right to her home?
