Have i done the right thing to report my bf to the police , as he had indecent pics of kids on his laptop?
Find answers to your legal question.

Have i done the right thing to report my bf to the police , as he had indecent pics of kids on his laptop?

My boyfriend of 3 months , left his laptop open one night , and i looked because there was nothing on tv , and on it were quite a few very indecent pictures of young girls aged 7 - 14ish. i was so disgusted and confronted him about it , but he said he didnt know where they came from . i gave him 3 weeks to find out where they came from , but he done nothing about it . so i contacted the NSPCC - uk , and they informed the police. That night i was visited from the CID , and had to give a statment. i now cant sleep , cant eat or drink . have i done the right thing ? ..this is going to ruin his life , career, hel lose his job and car. he is a teacher you see , teaches music to primary schools in Scotland. and has very close contact with kids , doing lots of extra cirricular activities, and has private pupils who come to his flat for lessons . i cant believe what i saw , but he says they arent his. could someone please give me their opinion . thank you
Additional Details
Thank-you to all who answered ! your right i have done the right thing. Suppose its just daunting knowing how much my actions can affect lots of different peoples lives. But its the chance im taking , if it will make us one sick person less.
No its not craig meehan either.
And to the person who said why did it take me 3 weeks? .. unless you have been in the situation , you cannot comment , you dream they pictures? .. think about it everytime you see a child, and im sorry my first instinct wasnt to call the police , this kinda thing needs thinking. if i called them that night , i woulda been crying , shaking , got a story muddled , and maybe who knows , ****** up the entire thing. i got my head straight , and done what i thought best.

Again , thank you to all . xxxx

Of course you did the right thing.
These things don't "just appear" on someones computer.

Don't worry about ruining his life, think of the lives you potentially saved from being ruined i.e. kids.
If he is a primary school teacher then any and all of his pupils were at risk.

Caroline you have SO done the right thing. I know it's not easy but don't feel bad. Just think about all the children you will have helped by doing this. Now you have said something, it's not your responsibility anymore. I firmly believe that once you have seen something... anything... that is wrong, (eg poverty, abuse) it is your responsibility to do something about it. You have and you should be proud that you have done the right thing, especially as it must have been so hard for you.
God Bless you in this and everything else you do.

fairy_funny85
Oh my goodness! Of course you have done the right thing! He is in contact with children all the time & I think if you kept it quiet you would feel even more guilty and if you ever had children with him how would you know your own children would be safe around him. Well done you may just have saved hundreds of childrens lives! Can you imagine growing up knowing someone you trusted took pictures of you like that or even worse? You definetly did the right thing. Well done again.

Sometimes you have to ruin a life to save other people's life. What bothers me is that your man is a teacher and get incontact with plenty of children. This makes the situation quite explosive and can lead him in the future to bigger problems. I think it's your duty to report him because you seem to be a good girl and you need to get rid on that weight on your shoulders

Elizabeth
Yea right, he didn't know where they came from uh huh. You did the right thing. If he is a pervert, he doesn't need to be around children.

prince_henry
well lets face it if hes smart he would of got rid of the pics and even got rid of his lap top.
all he has to do is say it got nicked out of his car
with out that there is no Evidence against him.
but if he still has it, and they are still there he is in deep sh1t.
but then if there are only a few it could be that they are on there coz some prat sent them as a sick joke but you did the right thing this needs to be looked into and if anything your b/f has been very very silly
you have to put the kids he comes into contact first and take no chances with their well-being so in my view you did the right thing and you should be thanked for it, well done

you are afraid you have ruined his life... well if these pictures genuinely "appeared" on his laptop, he will have nothing to worry about as the missunderstanding will be found out when they do tests/searchs or whatever to find out how they got there. But really... how could they get there... and to a place you found extreamly easily? you gave him warning, he didnt even try and do anything about it? He works with children, he will know more than anyone that these kind of images are illegal and how much trouble he would get into having them on his computer. It will be stressful thinkin how close you felt to this person but you really did not do anything wrong. Imagine it was a family member of yours that was a student of his. Even if he was never going to molest a child or do anything untoward, would you be happy knowing how close he could get the them with the types of thoughts he has about children? He will have a lot of pyscological testing. to be honest it is highly likely he was molested as a child. but this is no excuse and you did the right thing 100%. remember it doesnt reflect on you the type of person he was. friends and family would be behind you for reporting your concerns.

Yes you did the right thing! im pretty sure most other people would say the same, so don't worry too much.

maxemesis
It hurts, but that was absolutely the right thing. Even if he wasn't molesting children now, he'll progress into it. You don't want any part of that, and at the very least started him on his way to some much needed help.

wolfie
If they aren't his pics then who's are they? Looks pretty bad.

I think you did the right thing by reporting it, especially since he's a teacher.

The police will sort it out.

sedona
Caroline, you've got to stop worrying, every one above me says you've done the right thing, we all can't be wrong, this man works with children, end of story

Sexie
You've done the right thing, and luckily you haven't been dating too long, so even though I'm sure this is devastating, it's not like you're madly in love and just found out a horrible secret. He is lying about not knowing where the pictures came from. I've seen quite a few stories on the news about teachers engaging in this sort of thing and it's only a matter of time before he hurts a child. You are in the right- cut this guy out of your life and move on. And be happy that you are keeping him away from children.

People like this are very likely to do something that actually does victimize an innocent person. Especially with his occupation. Furthermore, he knew he was breaking the law and that there were risks involved. It was his choice to willfully break the law. These laws are on the books for a reason and they are justified.

With computer forensics there are also ways of investigating who actually did it. Every file has a record of when it was saved on the hard drive. There is other evidence that can be analyzed as well, such as web browsing logs. He will get a fair trial and be able to present his side of the story (if he even has one) More than likely, however, he really is guilty, and therefore, he will be convicted.

yes you did the right thing they always say its not theres but its onhis computer who else can it be this guy teaches kids who trust him and that makes them easy prey if he decides to go a step further well done to you i hope he gets jailed ,and you have the sense to move on.

Anna P
Yes, you don't want anything to do with someone like that. That type of behavior ALWAYS escalates and you were brave to report him, bravo. He should obviously NOT be teaching children.

150% you did the right thing, somethings you can give people the benefit of the doubt over but this is not one of them. i know your loyalties must feel pretty streched right now but if what he says is true and they did get on his machine by accident the police will be able to find that out when they do tests on his machine. what ever happens if he is guilty you are well shot of him and if he turns out to be telling the truth he should understand your actions especially as he is a teacher and if confronted with the same situation would have done the same thing.

mentor
Whilst I applaud your reporting this matter to the authorities if it actually happened I am concerned as to why you gave him three weeks to find out where the pictures came from as most people would have called the police straight away.
The police will need to inspect the computer themselves and by giving him three weeks you have given him the chance to remove any incriminating evidence and, indeed get rid of the computer.
I assume by your posting that you are no longer in the relationship with this man and the police will have to look into a possibility you are being malicious although I am not saying this is the case.
You have done the right thing in reporting this but as I have already said you left it late and in doing so could have helped this man get away with any offence.

wheelrim
You should be proud of yourself, a great thing you have done.

I have never had images like those `accidently` appear.

You are well shot, and the Police need to speak to people like that.

Well done again.

did you do the right thing...of course you did. I'm sorry you had to face that. but your courage may save a lot of children from having their lives wrecked. I'm not surprised that you cant sleep. poor old you. be brave. see it through and be assured that most decent people will admire your courage and support you all the way. screw he's career. he probably only chose it to get access to children in the first place. a lot of us on here allow email. if you need support or just to talk then most of us will be only be too happy to help. i wish you all the luck in the world. and on behalf of my grand children, thank you.xxxx
