Help!. 911?

my little brother just called 911 by accident but hung up. then the people from 911 called back... they asked for my name, adress and phone number. i explained that it was my brother and he let us go... its been 40 minutes since i was on the phone with the police and they havent come to check my house or anything yet. it was only an accident so they shouldnt come but once again its been already 40 minutes. can they still come? and will we get charged for a false alarm or anything ?
please help.

First of all, if you call 911 by accident, stay on the line. The dispatcher will get the call regardless of if you hang up the phone or not (911 doesn't work like phones, you can't hang up and the call goes away). Some one responded that they respond to every 911 call to their department. This isn't true. Police officers have no idea of how many calls come in on a daily basis because they are not there answering the phone when it rings, they only know when they are sent to one.

When a 911 call comes in the dispatcher will assess the situation. If the caller has already hung up the line, the dispatcher will attempt to call the number back. If there is no answer or only voicemail an officer will be sent. If the phone line is still open and no one is talking to them, they will be sent. If the caller stays on the line and explains a mistake the dispatcher will listen to the tone of voice of the caller and the background noises to determine if there is anything suspicious. At that point it is really up to the dispatcher whether or not to send someone.

If you haven't gotten a visit from the police in 40 mins then you're not going to get one. 911 calls are considered an "urgent" matter and are usually there in well under 20 mins. And no, you will not be charged with a crime for mistakenly or accidentally calling 911 unless you harass the 911 center.

It is usually up to the 911 call taker to decide whether or not to send the police. If 911 thought you were lying or thought there was trouble there and you just couldn't say it, they would send the police. Many people call 911 by "mistake" and most of them are mistakes (or kids fooling around with the phone). Police do not go to all of them, unless the dispatcher thinks there is something not quite right about it (they will always send police if they call back and there is no anwer or if there is an open line)
Here in my city in Ontario, there is no charge for a false 911 call (there is a charge for false burglar alarms though).

They might, just remember is some cases victims call 911 and in fear for their lives and if the suspect is close by they might hang up and pretend it was an accident. So it for the best that they check up to make sure everything is fine. I highly doubt that you will get charged. It happens a lot just remember they are there to make sure everything is safe.

ive also called 911 on accident. i told them that it was a mistake and they never came. don't worry.

Nothing will probably happen since you gave them info and explanation.

Maybe.

If it's really just a little kid who called 911 and he shouldn't have, don't freak out, but teach him the lesson of how and when to call 911.
I remember my parents teaching me when I was REALLY young how to call "operator" in case of an emergency. It's one of those "lessons". :)

Why would they show up if it were an accident?
Don't worry - they aren't going to show up and you aren't going to be charged with anything.

angelica7979
if you explained that it was a mistake, you should be fine, but i have no experience in this so good luck (just in case).

evilprincess
no you won't get charged with anything and if they aren't there in 40mns then chances are they won't be knocking on your door. the best thing for anyone to do is if you know you dialed 911 by accident stay on the line and tell the person .. saves us a lot of time and resources from calling back and verifying everything is okay and your parents should counsel your little brother that calling 911 and hanging up is not a game and should only be called when there is a life threatening emergency.

i am sure if ur brother is a child and he did it on accident they will not press charges good luck

don't worry about it, they get that all the time. If they do come and check it out just tell them again. You won't get charged

You handled it just fine. You did let them know it was an accident and you can assure that it wont happen again. For reassurance to them you gave your name and phone.

If they do charge you just be greatful they exist to call you back should it have been a real emergency.

Take care.

God Bless

It depends on where you are. In my jurisdiction, we respond to every 911 call, every time. It may take us a few minutes but we will be knocking at your door.

If it was truly an accident, there should be no charges.

Gottlos
I doubt it.
