Help? Cops came to my house?
|
So I was in a dept store the other day and I found a wallet, I took a look at the wallet and found some money in it, I took the money and left everything else where I found it, I then put something on lay away and left, about 5 days later (last night) I was told by my neighbor that the cops came to my house and were looking for me,
My question is:
Can they even do anything? Wouldnt anyone do that? Can I get arrested? What are the implications?

You did not say where this happened, but your state probably has a law requiring you to return found property of value. You took advantage of someone elses misfortune, and that is considered theft. |

Um danny the right thing to do was to take it to the police station. If somebody does not claim it with in some many days it is yours. But I think they would have got it back to the owner..Taking some ones money is stealing |

Own up to it and be accountable for your actions. I will answer your questions in order
YES, they can and will do something about it!!
NO, no self respecting, honest person would do that
YES, you will get arrested for THEFT!
IMPLICATIONS: you have a criminal record now for being a thief!
Offer to pay the money back and learn from this experience. |

The economy is bad enough without having to worry about some person taking your money. they prob got you on tape and you got your finger prints all over that wallet. Of course they can do something about it. If you went shopping and dropped your wallet would you want somebody to steal from you? i doubt it. |

I'm quite positive this is considered theft.
You could have turned it in. You took the money instead.
Then you left it there regardless. I think that is theft - there was identifying information in the wallet thus you knew it belong to some one and you had the information to prove it. Thus you were stealing. If the money was just on the floor or where ever without any identifying information then that is lost and you found it. There are laws on that as well. I believe you will be cited / basically arrested on the spot and allowed to go on your own accord with a court date. Where you will likely have to pay back the money you took out of the wallet in addition to the court fees / and likely some community service. |

You are a thief and they have you on film. They probably also have your name since you put something on layaway. Yeah you're going to get a court date and no I wouldn't do that. |

Well, congratulations! You committed theft! Now they have proof that you did it and used the money to buy something. Yes, you could be arrested. Depending on the amount of money you stole, it could be a felony. The dollar amount is typically $300 or more for it to be a felon, but it can vary by state, many of which use the $100 amount as the dividing line. There is also a law in most states that requires you to turn found property over to the police and failure to do so is a crime in itself.
...and no, most people wouldn't do that. Most people believe in the idea that we treat others as we would want to be treated and most people would like their money back along with the wallet. Most people try to do the right thing and not the selfish thing. |

they were probably able to ID you through a security camera. they can arrest you for theft and depending on the amount will depend on the grading of the charge. expect to be arrested. |

It was wrong of you to steal the money. The right thing to do would of been to turn it in. Anyways...to answer your question, they can charge you with theft. Also, you can probably get arrested and have to spend 2 or 3 days in jail for it. |

They probably got you on camera and have your name to go with it because of the lay away. I'm not sure if you can get in trouble or not for taking the money. It might be theft since hit was his property and the credit card and drivers license inside provide ownership. |

Honesty is always the best policy and who knows you may have gotten a big reward for turning it in but being a thief makes you feel guilty hence the wondering now if you can get in trouble |
