How are 911 dispatchers trained? I want to physically hurt this woman who answered this poor girls call.?

I would have to agree with Bruce on the fact this woman should not be a dispatcher. There is a huge difference between being cold and not letting calls get personal. This woman was cold in my opinion. I was a dispatcher during a knee injury and my main goal was calming down the caller while doing my job behind the desk sending units and looking up addresses to dispatch the closest appropriates. The first thing the woman did wrong was not entice the child. A quick "What's your name dear" or "Whats your name sir/mam/hon etc goes a long way. Once you have their name it's easier to calm people down.

"Susan can you tell me your address?" Is better than "Where at?"
"Susan calm down so i can help you" is better than "Put someone else on the phone"

When i heard the child say her mom is almost dead the first thing i would have done was traced the call and sent police fire and ems. Then i would get more info to inform all responding units.

Here we have a little girl who is going through more in 5 minutes than she has gone through in her whole life. This girl is stressed enough during this phone call and this lazy scum is making an 8 year old girl do her job for her. Nothing like making 6 digits to sit on your butt and do nothing.

The first thing she should have done was initiated an emergency phone trace.

The next thing she should have done is ask the girl what she lives near. A school, supermarket, park, or some other landmark so medical help and police could at least respond to the general area.

She also should have immediately asked the mother's name, which she could have looked up in the phone book, on the internet, or in their in-house computer.

I only listened to the first minute and a half. At that point, it was obvious to me that person should not be a dispatcher.

Don't they have Enhanced 911 in the Detroit area? Most enhanced 911 systems know the caller's address and can show it on a nice convenient map.

Of course, the Enhanced 911 system was only made possible by mandates by big government, and financed by taxes on phone bills.

I know that you have never answered an emergency call but this dispatcher handled this pretty well. The little girl had no idea where she was, the dispatcher walked her through a few steps to find out the address, and eventually the girl found an envelope or something.

The last thing that a dispatcher wants to do is to be emotional or start crying along with the girl because that will only make matters worse. The dispatcher was calm and composed throughout the call. You may thing that she was "cold" but that is exactly what she needed to be.

I'll tell you what. Your county has a 911 center. Make a request to go there one night to listen in on 911 calls. After two hours you won't be quite so emotional about this situation.
