I'm writing a novel and need to know how can a 16 yr old can get sent to prison?

A sixteen year old can't get sent to prison. He would be sent to juvenile detention until he reached the age of majority, and then transferred to an adult prison.

Once you are 16 when it comes to crimes, you are a adult. If a 30 year old man committed a crime and got prison time, and if a 16 year old committed the same crime, he would get the close to the same sentence.
