I understand how they can get your pin number by putting a device into an ATM machine, but how do they get people's social security number. How do I avoid my social;security number from being stolen?

A social security number is unbelievably easy to find. They go through garbage, old files, the internet, etc. They file through bank statements, certificates, applications, anything that can have a SSN on it. Think about all the times you've handed out your social security number, verbally or written, it's quite a few. The best way to protect yourself? NEVER put your social security number online. If it's absolutely necessary, say an application for something, call the company and tell them so they can secure it on the phone. There are plenty of hackers waiting to prey on people online in situations like that. As for any other time, never say it out loud, make sure it's being given to a authoritative person, not an "assistant" or "friend" of the person. Any important papers, such as bank statements, bills, certificates... either store them in a safe place, or get a security paper shreader and feed em' through! There are also websites and company's you can research to sign up with that will protect and stand behind the protection of your SSN. |

many ways to get social security numbers. job applications, your job has it in their files, bank info, hospital records, all in gov't records & computers. you give it up for car loans, credit cards, etc. its everywhere. its not hard to get and its not really protected. anyone can get to it. that's why its wise to keep up on your credit reports. :) |
