The police are scum. If a joe on the street had killed this man it would be life in prison. The police recently ran over the brother of a good friend of mine and they weren't even so much as reprimanded. He was a good worker and great family man. They were speeding and weren't even heading to an emergency when they hit and killed him. The police are above the law. They are scum. They are scum. I never ring the police for anything. I would rather die. |

OH COME ON! are you saying that a man who is obviously not carrying a bomb deserved to get shot 10 times in the head? Then they try to say he was a rapist then a Coke fiend. Its an open and shut case..........HEAVY HANDED POLICE BRUTALITY! |

He might have been overstaying his visa, but he was a harmless human being and should not have lost his life. |

No he was a human being and rules still apply. One illegal act, by anyone, does not make anything after that null and void. |
|

Phil McCracken
|
The Home Office said he arrived in Britain on 13 March 2002, initially being granted a six-month visitor's visa. He then applied to stay on a student visa, receiving permission to remain until 30 June 2003. It said it had no record of any further correspondence. A spokeswoman added: "We have seen a copy of Mr de Menezes' passport, containing a stamp apparently giving him indefinite leave to remain in the UK. On investigation, this stamp was not one that was in use by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate on the date given."
The family of de Menezes however deny this, and then Foreign Secretary Jack Straw stated that he believed de Menezes was living in the UK legally
....So, it seems to Home Sec was happy he was NOT an illegal immigrant. And even if he was, does that give the police a right to murder him?
The trial also said he did not "run away" or "jump the ticket barrier" - the POLICE jumped the barrier, not him. |
|

Mr Sceptic
 |
You really are an idiot.
You say Menezes was in this country illegally, then Home Secretary, Jack Straw says he wasn't. Who is more likely to know the truth - the man in charge of immigration or Mickyboy?
And if he was? (Which he wasn't)
You seem to think that the police should have the right to summarily execute an illegal immigrant, without challenge. In a country which doesn't have the death penalty.
It's entirely proper that the Metropolitan Police has been found guilty of a catalogue of errors which lead to a man's death.
(But it's OK, Mickyboy - it was only a foreigner)
It's also entirely proper that none of the individual officers have been held culpable for Menezes' death, which was due to poor procedures at Scotland Yard. There's only one man responsible, in the final analysis, and that's the man at the top. Sir Ian Blair should resign. |

so you think it's ok an innocent man died? |
|

Mr Abba

Because they were guilty and thats the fact. Whether he was legal or illegal doesnt mean he deserved to be killed. |

The propaganda put out by the police is clearly still believed by many.
Some established facts, now verified by the Met themselves:
* Menezes was NOT an illegal immigrant - his status here was legal. Even if he was illegal that would make absolutely no difference to how the police should have conducted themselves.
* The police did not stop or challenge him at any point
* At no point did he run from the police (obviously, as he did not know they were there)
* When he was shot in the head seven times at point blank range he was sitting on the train, not making any attempts to get away, or in fact doing anything suspicious at all
These are all verifiable facts that came out of the case. You can even watch all of the CCTV footage that the police didn't conveniently lose, as it was released to the media today, so you can see for yourself that Menezes was just a commuter like any other, who was brutally murdered by incompetent police officers. |

OMG DO ANY OF YOU LISTEN !!!!
they weren't found guilty of murder they were found guilty of public endangerment!!! |

The man was not in the country illegally. He did not run. He did not jump the ticket barrier. He was not wearing a bulky jacket. He did not look anything like the man he was mistaken for. No warning was given before he was shot because the officers had decided to kill him, based on an ambiguous order. We don't kill people for murder these days, let alone these minor offences (if he had been committing them). Overall the UK police have a very good reputation. You can see their critics lining up for help when in trouble. This case was a complete failure, caused mainly by inept management. It was made worse by some of the officers telling lies when they realised they had killed an innocent man. That was unforgiveable. |

Public endangement !
That makes the verdict much worse. The police were trying to protect the public.
Like somebody else said the PC rubbish going on these days has gone far too far.
Would the public have been less endangered if he had been ignored and had been a bomber ? |
|

UTOPIA OR BUST,
|
because they did not know he was an illegal immigrant they thought he was a bomber. which he was not, so if you over stay on your holiday visa to any country in the world you won't mind if the police chase you and shot you seven times. because that is what your saying the penalty for over staying in a country for anyone should be to be shot seven times |
|

Edwardthegreat

you're right dude. this man who was shot was an illegal immigrant and a cocaine addict handing out money to drugs barons so they can shoot people to death on our streets. Furthermore he was from Brazil where he would have been in far greater danger from police incompetence. Because in Brazil there was a time not long ago when the government threatened to stamp out corruption in the police force and the police went on a rampage and killed 30 innocent civilians. But over here the police mistake a cocaine-addicted illegal immigrant for a terrorist and everyone gets all emotional. |

I agree with Mr Sceptic ?.Blair should resign, this is not the first time he has made mistakes in his job, as well as being an arrogant tosser, he is also a danger to the public by being in the position he holds. |

Nice one...so - Senor de Menezes was 'illegal immigrant', and so he was shot. Hmm...that's sorted then. Didn't think execution was the punishment - but hey...don't mind me! |

Because the PC nutters are taking over and everything is upside down.. like a burglar could sue you cause he has an accident in your house ...Shot the bugger i say !!! |
|

mokiemagic

yup! he wasnt a terrorist (or so we are told!) but he was an illegal immigrant with cocain in his system at time of death. Personally, as a member of the public, I would rather have the police make a split second decision and kill a terror suspect than stand back and let a bomber kill another 100 or so people...which is what Will happen next time as the police will be less inclined to act for fear of reprisals. |

I have no idea how that works. |

For all that shout about disgrace - had he been a terrorist and about to kill you, your partner and children you wouldn't talk such rubbish!
We were in a high alert 'terrorist threat situation'. His death WAS tragic but hey lets criminalise these highly trained officers who put their lives on the line for who ME AND YOU!
They got it wrong - how many innocent people would have lost their lives if they had been right and hesitated!
Get real and go after the real ' guilty ' ones.

This question is so unbelievably stupid, I'm at a loss at what to say. HOW THE HECK DOES THAT JUSTIFY MURDER? That means if you are illegally in another country and someone kills you, especially if they didn't do their homework correctly, your friends and family, as well as the public, will understand and be okay with it because at the end of the day, you shouldn't have been there? There's one born every minute... |

He did not deserve to die but his own conduct on the day made it inevitable. he was not an innocent man he was here illegally.
Had he been one of the bombers and succeeded I wonder what the 20/20 vision experts would have said then.
Where the Met need kicking is that when it was obvious that they had got the wrong man, it should have been properly reported not to the press by the way but the the Chief. it shows that trust and discipline within the Met had dropped to a frightening degree |

So lets just let them go around pumping bullets into people who's visas have expired then.Plenty of room on the tube then i suppose.Good grief what is this country coming to! |

Do you have a link.
Lots of disturbing news coming out of the UK lately.

I have no time whatsoever for the PC brigade, nor do I know the minutiae of this case, but if armed police shout "stop or we shoot" then you damn well stop or pay the consequences. We are forever moaning that our police are more interested in parking/speeding offences etc. yet when they do act they are still condemned. Yes I am sorry a fellow human being lost their life but disobey the law at your peril. The Brazilian police are known for their brutality, surely a citizen of that country would have dropped to the floor when confronted in this way. Let us wait to see the level of compensation demanded by the family of the deceased. |

Yes, I find it irksome to hear that he was 'completely innocent'. He obviously wasn't an islamic suicide bomber but as an illegal immigrant, neither was he completely innocent. |

The Met are the most disrespected police force (not police service) in the land. Apart from Menezes there was the case of Ian Tomlinson and going back a little further there was the case of Harry Stanley (the man with the mended table leg). When I worked in London a colleague told me of a disastrous night out. He went for a meal at a restaurant as part of a foursome. As they were leaving the restaurant a person dressed as a hippy made rude comments so the colleague told the hippy to button his mouth. Just as they got into their car three police cars arrived to box-in the vehicle. Apparently one of the men resembled a wanted criminal so once again it was a case of mistaken identity. The police claimed that the three police cars were just a routine traffic stop and to save face they fitted-up the driver (who hadn't actually driven) for drunk driving. A few years ago I was threatened by an officer in the Met even though I am a pensioner. I had hoped to see the Notting Hill Carnival but on the way up from the South West a tyre shredded on my friends car. A strange thrumming noise had been going on for about half a mile but the shredded tyre would not have been a problem at all if the driver with the Cambridge maths degree hadn't stomped on the brake pedal, duh! Car was written off after spinning like a ballerina and going down an embankment. Needless to say it was extremely late by the time I reached Notting Hill. Having narrowly escaped being killed it was a bit much to be snarled at by some stroppy young copper and told to go home or I would be arrested! They all seem to miss the point that our taxes pay their wages and that their original job was to protect the public from thieves. Ever noticed on TV how they never pick on on the guys built like quarter-backs? Oh no they pick on the bloke in the wheelchair, FACT it has been on national TV. Incidentally it is noteworthy that the Met were not allowed to tackle the London Embassy siege because the government knew that they would screw-up. Instead the SAS were employed and they did a fantastic job. The Met would have probably machine gunned everybody as perception skills on a par with the cartoon character Mr McGoo appear to be a pre-requisite for becoming a Met firearms officer. |
