How can we respect police officers when there are so many counts of police abusing other people?
Find answers to your legal question.

How can we respect police officers when there are so many counts of police abusing other people?

I just watched the video of Peoria police beating the motorist. Only two were arrested? I saw more than two police in that video - the officers who didn't STEP IN should be charged - they should be ashamed of themselves.
It brings tears to my eyes to see these kinds of things - we're supposed to be able to trust authority, but we can't.

How are we supposed to respect police when we police beating is not even RARE? I mean, sure, there's more "good" police than there are "bad" police (or so I hope and believe) but this is ridiculous. Plus, I only know about the beatings that were released to the media - I can just imagine the ones that were kept secret.

I'd say "no offense" to any police officers out there - but you SHOULD be offended. You should be outraged that the public doesn't trust you. I'm 19 and I already don't trust you. I had the nicest neighbor who was a police officer and even though I've had good experiences with police, I STILL don't trust you.

Thoughts?

You really think it's bad enough that 1 out of 10 commit these offenses?
I was hoping for a better number. But I'm interested that you think since it's not the majority that it's not outraging... I guess that's typical of our current society.

Because those were how many police officers out of the all of the police officers in the nation?

Why don't you turn this around. Since there are 19 year old criminals - why should the rest of us trust _you_?

BTW - since you are accusing the police of 'secret' crimes, should we not also assume that you have comitted 'secret' crimes yourself?

You never hear (or watch YouTube videos of) police officers doing their job well. You never see it when they get some OD'd druggie an ambulance. You never see it when they pull over a car for speeding and don't know if they'll be killed as soon as they step out of their patrol car. You never see it when they simply stop into a store on their beat and ask the merchant how things are.

The number of officers in the country is in the tens of thousands while the number of abuses is much smaller.

Bear those facts in mind.

I have never worked with those officers, I have not trained with them, in fact I've never met them. I don't understand how you can compare me to them.

I do know there are about 800,000 sworn officers in the United States, and you just compared 799,998 of them to the two in the video. That is pretty pale in comparison to the 1 in 10 someone else mentioned.

Additional: Yes, I am concerned of the effect that has on the public perception. However, look at the King County assault on the teenage girl. That went unnoticed for four months, until an officer heard about it, checked the tapes, and turned them in to his superior. People were quick to condemn the officer who did the assault, but didn't comment on the fact another officer is the one that turned him in. Yes, there are bad officers out there. Good officers don't like them either.

Why do you ignore the other 90% of officers who don't commit abuses?

Pssst...

The media has an agenda.

Have not seen the video in question and cannot answer credibly to that specific incident.
In no particular order:
With any situation, of any kind, when you are a video voyeur you need to have the perspective that you do not know what happened before or after the footage you are viewing.
Beatings are as rare as "hens teeth". I think cops show too much restraint at times. They have been cowed by lawyers.
People cannot put themslves in the place of law enforcement, They perform a dangerous service that is thankless from both ends, the courts and the public they protect. Cops aren't imported from some other planet, and like any human they have a limit of tolerance. The restraint they show in the face of years of abuse is amazing.
Some people deserve beating, and it's the inability to give it to them that makes them bolder.
The same people who hold the cops to a lofty standard, want them to come out blasting everything in sight should they themselves be in real danger.
I wonder is your neighbor the police officer trusts YOU?

REBUTTAL:Saw the video , thank you for the link. There is no way of knwoing what this individual did one way or the other from the video. Also, Some one's brother / son, may also be some one's assailant / murderer. His screams are not enough to convice me he did not deserve this, (or did). Not enough info, to pass judgement.

so are you going to stereotype all police based on these highly publicised events, yes bad cops. like bad plumbers, surgeons, policticians, students with automatic weapons.

Yes there are counts of abuse, yes no doubt there are corrupt and dangerous police officers out there, but the tiniest of minorities.

To be balanced why not have a look at the various police department remembrance pages and see how many die, how many put their lives in danger to save others, and indeed give up their lives.

read the press in relation to numerous rape victims and relatives of the murdered and loomk athe the praise given to police.

that doesnt make as good a news story as all cops are bad though does it.

You are not qualified to say a damn thing about the police until you have worked one day out on 3rd shift patrol. Everyone always wants to scream "police brutality!!!" when there's no grounds for it.

In all fairness, undesirables do get through the process and go on to give a bad name to the rest of law enforcement, but you have to look at the good side, too. The long-winded moron above me must have gotten himself into some trouble, because I've never seen any intelligent, rational person say anything like that before.

The media, which is what I'm assuming you're getting ALL of your information from, is trying to get ratings. Nobody wants to watch a police officer helping kids across the street, or pulling people out of a crumpled car, or really anything "good" at all. But the minute someone does their job and uses force on someone who has it coming, then all the world is in a frenzy. What you have to understand is that 99.999% of the time that you see an officer using a taser, or the baton, or even shooting somebody, they were more than justified in doing so, whether you want to believe it or not.

So don't trust law enforcement if you don't want to, but I promise you that if the police weren't around, you'd be screaming to have them back soon enough. So shut your mouth.

At 5 a.m they showed a video of a dad being rammed off the road by a police cruiser with his children and baby strapped in...the dad was not drunk-he had no alcohol in his system-it was 3 minutes after midnight on New Years Eve and he was speeding, probably trying to avoid the drunks- he was on his way home early and sober, and when the cherries went on he slowed down and signalled he was pulling over but there was an icy ditch on the side of the highway so to avoid killing his family he needed to take less than a minute to pull over, so the cop rammed him hard and more than once with her squad vehicle and the dads topheavy vehicle could have easily toppled upside down on the icy roads.

He got out and yelled, "WTH are you doing, there are children in the car?"

He was forced with a gun firmly pressed into his head to leave his very small children as he was hauled off to jail.

The cops police department said she did nothing wrong. She was not even cited. They said he was, "resisting arrest."

I say that the ones that see this should tell INTERNAL AFFAIRS or the higher authority with a video camra if possiable. This is unaccepted by tthe code of ethics the Police are to abide by. See if you can find the Constitution bill of rights. This will show you what is protected by every citizen in the U.S.A. as citizens. Have hope the criminal law college students are not from The "GOOD OLE BOY ERA" and DO NOT AGREE w the strong arm rule due to "perceptions but fact".....
