How can you prevent robberies?

Carry a can of mace or a weapon of some sort. Most thieves of that sort look for an easy target. If you do not present an easy target you will not be made a victim.
If they are breaking into your house get a large dog that will also deter them. If you rent an apt you may want to discuss this with the landlord.
You could also convince a friend that can defend themselves well and ask them to wait in your house one night with all the lights off or something.
You could create your own cheap alarm system there are many ways to achieve this.
I am not certain that a gun is the best choice unless you carry it or keep it close at all times. You could also keep the gun broken into it's separate parts, and keep them in locations that are not in the same room. You would want to get good at putting those pieces together, but the last thing you want is that crook to steal a gun from you.

Only about 32-34 of those states actually issue permits. The rest just say they do.

You DO NOT need a permit to carry a gun in your own home unless you live in MA, NJ, NY or CA. In those states you need something called a FID. Firearms ID. It's very simple to get. Your local gun dealer will be happy to help you. You can get yourself a nice .38 special. It's a good gun for ladies self defense.

Remember: YOU MUST STUDY THE LAWS OF YOUR STATE. I cannot tell you without knowing where you are, what is and isn't allowed for self defense.

You must also practice with your gun, and know your gun. You can't just buy it and lock it away. I take my guns out once a month and run 50-100 rounds through each to make sure they are working right and my aim is still true.

You must also understand that the gun will protect you as long as you have it. If someone comes at you, you have to shoot or they may disarm you.

Once you are comfortable though, you will feel empowered.

48 states issue handgun carry permits.

Take a class, learn to use a gun and keep it with you.

Make sure you have good locks for your doors and maybe get a hidden camera that films an area you think you can get his Identity.

Get a bull dog and lock your doors.If you can get it, a dingo is better they can't bark and the robber won't know what happens until he is getting his butt chewed up.
