How did police from a different city know my name?

2 weeks ago me and my friend stole motor oil from a store. they got us on camera in the store and got my license plate in the parkilng lot. yesterday 2 detectives came to my house but i was at school, they talked to my mom and told her everything that happened and they left her a number for me to call them. when they came to my house they mentioned my name before my mom told them anything. the car i was driving the day we stole the oil is registered under my parents name. that is why im wondering how they knew my name. is it possible that an employee from the store knows me? or could it be that they asked the local police? i only have traffic tickets from local police...no criminal records... or could it be the manager at the stole since she is friends with my dad? i highly doubt its the manager though because she is not a regular manager, she is the manager of training. i dont know exactly what a manager of training does but i know shes not a regular manger at the store. what other ways could they have known my name?

More than likely they ran the plate and got your parents info and called your local P.D. and told them what they had and one of your local cops knew who you were and told them. Or as you think an employee at the store saw you on the tape and knew you and told the cops your name. |

In parts of California, maybe elsewhere a cop car can scan all the license plates at a busy intersection and spit out the name of every driver, whether they have a warrant, or if their vehicle is registered or not in a few seconds so I imagine if they integrated enough information this would be possible too if you lived at home- yet we cannot protect our borders. |
