How do I become a firefighter?

I am 19 years old and i'm a freshman in college. I've had a change in my career of choice and want to be a firefighter.

Learn to handle your hose properly! :) Seriously contact your local fire dept. Ask them for the specific requirements they have. The physical requirements are extensive. Basically plan to run five miles with a hundred pounds on your back. Go to firefighter school. The military has a good beginning school. Oh one of the things you will have to do is be able to lock into a ladder with your feet and legs and leave your hands free. Practice that.

You have to take a civil service exam, and I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 21.
