How do I get harassing phone calls to stop?

Some guy from a law firm (according to him) keeps calling me looking for someone I never heard of. I told him to stop calling me and he did. Now he's bugging my mother. Different address, and she's even less associated with whoever they're looking for than I am. According to them he's related to my husband, not me (and therefore not my mother).

How do I get this to stop? I feel pretty violated. And where is he getting my work number and my mother's number? Did he pull a copy of my credit report? Can he do that? I don't even know these people, nor whoever they're looking for. Do I call the non-emergency number for the police or is that overkill? If it's overkill, who DO I call?

Sounds like he is debt collecting (law firms do this too). A debt collector can call anyone if they think they can get a hold of the person who owes them money. However, it is against the law for them to call your work phone (they can't even do this if you are the person who owes you money). I would mail them a cease and desist order. You can google it and find a generic form to fill out. Also familiarize yourself with the Fair Debt Collection Act.

Check out the laws in your state that pertain to credit collection calls. There definetly is a way to stop him! You can get the collection company's information and send them a letter stating they are no longer allowed to call you. Make sure you send it certified mail so you have proof you sent it. If they still call you after that then they are violating credit laws.
