As I understand for a controlled buy to be effective and to avoid the entrapment defense the buy must be done a few times.
How do you avoid the entrapment defense if you only did 1 controlled buy?

It also makes me wonder because I always assumed the majority of controlled buys were done once and only once. I was reading an effective policing manual and it mentions the controlled buy must be done several times to avoid the entrapment defense.

Your entrapment defense doesn't work very well in court. You've really been misled.
If you purchased or sold narcotics ONCE, it's a felony and you'll be convicted.

You understand wrong.
Entrapment is when the police coerce you into doing an illegal activity you might not have done.
If you walk up to an undercover cop to try to score an 8-ball, that's not entrapment.
EDIT: Yes, entrapment is a common defense. And it almost always is a completely ineffective defense. |

I am not a lawyer, but I believe that in order for it to be entrapment in this context, you would have to prove that YOU specifically were targeted. If you just got caught in a random street buy, you're toast. |

There is no entrapment.
I'm not sure what "manual" your reading.....
Usually controlled buys are done more than once to prove that the person is a "dealer" instead of the defense that "I only did it that one time".
It's still a felony and you will (or should) get convicted. |
