The thing is, people are lazy. If mari j was legal hell yeah I would grow it I get tons of free fat *** seeds in my bud if I buy it off the plant, it would be sold in stores probly like rolling tobbaco, and maybe in pre rolled joints (cigarette style) And those would be taxed, its way harder and more time consuming to brew beer, and pure tobbaco isnt worth growing because the quality only gets so high, if I had a few plants I would put a lot of time into them and grow a really potent strain of bud |

Your definition of legal is not what would happen. You think it would be legal for everyone to grow and use.. More likely, it would require a license to grow and a license to consume. That's because u need to pay 200.00 or whatever to get the license, and that money goes straight to the US Treasury. Same with the consumption license... And that's how u get tax money. Of course, consuming without a license is fine (more money for US Treasury).
It's all set up to get tax money. |

although I could grow all my own I'll likely grow a little or none if I can just walk on down to my local Rite-Aid and pick up a Q.P. of green bud, without being concerned about the Badgers. |

KEEP IT ILLEGAL TO GROW AND SELL IT AT OR LOWER THAN STREET PRICE SO ILLEGAL DEALERS CANT COMPETE AND/OR PROFIT |

There is the Marijuana tax stamp act already in place for about 35 years, problem was nobody has ever been issued a tax stamp. Catch 22.
If it was legal, then it would not be illegal, thus cutting the market for illegal tampering and spiking with or lacing of the weed.
The govt and agencies can control it just like beer and wine you are allowed to use so much as gifts etc once past that amount busted.
Kind of like selling cars, allowed to sell 2 a month with out a license, or any other type of yard sales so many a year with out a vender's license, so we could hire more agents to enforce taxes.
Also look at how many individuals would be out of prison and reduce the overcrowding problem to a degree. |

I see what you are saying but as a veteran pothead I don't really agree. The thing for me is that if it was made readily available I wouldn't ever buy from homegrowers. If I could legally go into a coffee shop and buy a pack of joints I would never ever want to buy from a homegrower. Two reasons, I believe the government could grow way better pot and homegrowers might jack up the prices. If they packaged, sold and taxed it I would never violate the laws they set up for it. Kind of like biting the hand that feeds you. Thats just what I would do but I see what you are saying. |

You buy what is called a tax stamp. Arizona used to have this law in place to where you paid a certain amount every year or month and you could possess up to two ounces and it would not be illegal. The problem is that the douche bag police still took your pot even though you had paid for the right to have it and issued you a ticket. You then had to go to court and prove that you had paid for your tax stamp. You still lost your pot and had to pay your court fees. That is our American "JUSTICE" system! |

The best answer has already been given. Same reason people don't make their own beer or grow their own tobacco. Taxing it would be easy and make billions. An estimated 2 trillion dollars in tax revenue within 5 years. |

most people don't realize that cocaine is legal, it's just regulated as most pharmaceuticals are. it needs to be sold by registered businesses or sold by the government in certain stores. |

taxing is certainly a consideration. and backyard pot would definitely dominate the scene for awhile. but i take issue with your observation that you can grow your own tobacco. know anyone who does? of course not. locally, ciggys went up to $7.75+ this week. a backyard grower could make out well, but there are none as tobacco is a very highly controlled product. pot too could be controlled in this way. |

?Treat it like cigarettes or alcohol. Everyone can brew their own beer, too, and they don't do it.
If people could grow their own pot, that would reduce the demand for pot from Mexico. No market for their product. Fewer illegals bringing dope across the border. Less incentive to come here with their weed. |

The same way they tax it in California!!!! The smoke houses in California pay state and federal taxes and the government knows this!!! |

It's kinda tricky to grow tobacco or make beer. It's a more involved process, growing marijuana is relatively easy.
I don't believe it's possible to levy a tax on marijuana, legalize it, and expect decent revenue. It's too easy to dodge a tax. |
