Decriminalization for users wouldn't be so bad. A civil penalty with no jail time, unless the penalty isn't paid, would still send the message that the drugs are bad for you.
I do believe that severe criminal penalties should still exist for drug dealers, however. They prey on the weakness of people addicted to substances that are not healthy. |

Many people don't understand the difference between decriminalization and legalizing something, so here is the difference:
Decriminalizing something is to remove all laws completely and no law enforcement official can intervene with the activity that was once illegal. Legalizing something is to make something legal, but with regulations regarding it (for example, the government passes a law saying marijuana is legal but you can only have under an ounce on you at any given time).
I believe that decriminalizing all illegal drugs could make this country a "living hell". Once people become addicted to a certain drug, they are constantly going to need more and more for their addiction. Therefore, someone is going to have to provide the drugs to the people, and it is likely that there are going to be companies that will be founded for it, and those companies could end up being more powerful than we could ever imagine. There would probably be an incredible rise in crime do to the competition between drug running companies, which would make the country that it is legal in complete chaos. It is not a good idea what-so-ever, in my opinion. |

Wasn't all that long ago we nearly decriminalized small possession of pot for individuals in Canada. The penalty would have been equivalent to having an open can of beer with you in a public place.
Personally, pot couldn't care. It's one of the few drugs that rank in the same area as alcohol to me, other people(including other officers) have serious issues with it. I can think of a dozen other things we could be doing with the money redirected from busting grow-ops and such such as busting harder drug labs and dealing with the crime surge out west and in Toronto. |
