How do you honor a fallen police officer?

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It Happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, and gave us his all,
and a part of America died.

So how would you honor the men and women of law enforcement?

I honor and pay tribute to all current and fallen officers and have done so through dedicating my Blog on both Yahoo 360 and MySpace. I am posting the links below and hope and invite all of you to visit and comment.

In my blog I chose to pay special attention to Deputy Frank Denzinger and Police Chief Randy Lacy who were both recently killed in the line of duty. I have also incorporated the writing that I received from all of you in the short time Yahoo Answers allowed my tribute to remain posted yesterday.

To all men and women in law enforcement, to those who gave their lives for us, and to all the families I cherish you in my heart and continue to love and pray for you always.

Ladies G man

COPS give up their lives for total strangers.

I remember, when I was 10 years old, an officer died trying to save the life of some kids who were playing on the poorly frozen lake.

The ice broke and they fell through. The off duty cop fish all three kids out, but died later in hospital from severe hypothermia.

I honor him today by being a law-abiding citizen and helping other people, just like he saved me and my friends when we were ten.

I remember years ago as a new police recruit we would have to read the bio's of fallen officers for that day. Keep in mind each day an Officer dies. It may not make the news or even be spoken about at the local coffee shop but it happens. Some fall heroically. Others ambushed without warning. Either way they deserve our gratitude.

What is the best way to honor a fallen Officer? I guess its to keep their memory alive. Let it foster hope for the next generation and pray they become better than we are. That they learn from our mistakes and look to the future. Thatâ€™s who I work for... the children of tomorrow.

I think about them everytime I start my shift.

I do my best during my shift to make sure the hug I gave my eight year old as I left the house, doesn't have to last him the rest of his life.

I can only tell you how I would want to be honored if I ever become one of the fallen. I would want anyone that would to pick up my sword (figuratively speaking) and finish the battle for me. My goal in life is to make this world a better place before I leave it, to leave a good example for my children, and to take care of my family. I would hope that someone would finish my mission if I cannot. I expect that most police officers have similar goals.

So to those officers that have fallen, I think the best way to honor them is to ensure that their children receive the best education and love, guidance, and care that can be given to them. Their families, wives, husbands, or significant others, are comforted and are also taken care of. That someone would take up their fight with integrity, honor, courage, and dignity.

Continue to pray for the families and friends of those that have fallen; continue to pray for all of us that God will keep us safe and allow us to finish what we have started.

My boyfriend's dad is a police officer with the San Franciso Police Dept. In their house is a commendation plaque that is inscribed:

"The PEACE CORPS is not the TOUGHEST JOB you'll ever love --- Wearing the BADGE is!"
