How do you know if you are going to be receiving a police citation?

If a couple of police officers talked to me and a couple of my friends how do i know if we got citations? they spoke to us for about 30 minutes before letting us go off without being clear as to whether or not we were cited...they mentioned a couple times they could/might cite us but then just let us go...I was just curious as to whether to be expecting a citation or not.

Usually if you get citied... you have paperwork stating it.
