Make sentences tougher and prisons harsher. Lets not give them an easier ride than they get on the outside. That way they will want to behave inside, get out and not go back again.
I can only offer credit to those who have been on the wrong side of the law but come out of prison and got their life back on track and made something of themselves. |

Very simple.
First offence cut off the man's John Thomas.
Second offence cut off his head.
Third offence will not happen.
Crime will cease to exist overnight. |

i would take into consideration previous crimes for sure-a 15 yr old who steals a bottle of milk from a doorstep and a 25 yr old who does the same but has dozens of prior convictions i feel has to be sentenced differently-id be more likely to think and hope that the first persons crime was a silly one off-we dont have enough prisons etc to hold people and thats why they are back on the streets so soon-and i know real people who go in prison time aftr time just because they prefer it in there-maybe we should look at the individual and see what will hurt him most-say a guy who speeds constantly should have his car taken off him rather than just be fined and given a few points-of course with more serious offences like murder rape etc people shouldnt be let out early-so i guess in a nutshell let the penalty fit the crime |

I would stop the system being so farse.
Make a life sentence a life sentence.
If they get 10 years keep them for 10 years and not 5 maximum.
We are too much of a nanny state concerned about the human rights of people who have violated the human rights of others. |

I don't agree when you say "theft is theft and murder is murder".
For example, there is a big difference (in my opinion) between:
1. Guy gets stabbed in the street simply because he remonstrated with someone about throwing a mars bar wrapper into his car
2. Guy kills someone who has abused his kids
I would give a much lower sentence to the second one. |

Sentences are usually handed based on several factors; the type of crime committed, the severity of the crime, and the background and criminal history of the offender. Nothing is etched in stone, nor is there a "Big Book" that tells judges what a sentence should be; that's why there can be a disparity between one case and another. Also, some states are harder on certain crimes than other states, i.e., the Three Strikes Law in CA has locked up a number of criminals for what some people think are small crimes. Then again, it's three strikes and your out (in!). |

I was in prison for 4 yrs . The entire system is out dated . When you go in you have learn to hate everyone who no matter what . I took auto mechanics and learn how to hot wire cars . The system needs to be updated and made to where a prisoner is does his time for what they did not given a chance to better his skills . |

Actually I believe the whole system of "crime and punishment" is severely outdated. Punishing so-called "criminals" will do nothing to actually help them as people. When someone does something we, as a society, deem is inappropriate, rather than punishment we should give them counseling. We should enter them into a counseling program, give them a good job, and shower them with love to show them we understand and respect them. This will result in a much more positive outcome than punishment does. |

In Billary Clinton's case he got a $5,000,000 book deal and Dumbocrat support for lying to a grand jury and the American people, about the same time a US Air Force officer was sentenced to 10 years for lying about a similar incident. |

Sad to say we have so many people in power who are gut less including senior police and cabinet ministers. For years we have been told punishment will not work. Well if someone told me if I stab you to death I will die, I would think again. If someone told me 20 years in prison will be just that I would think again. If I was fed on basics and no luxury even TV I would think again. However I have not committed a crime like 1000's of old and poor in this country who are treated far far worse than criminals. |

The legal system is a complete farce. The problem is the govt doesn't have the money to change it. I don' think anybody really knows what to do.
I think the focus needs to be in two areas.
1. Modernising the Prison/Legal system - updating prisons, building new ones. Hiring more prison staff. Making the system recognise offences and punishment based on merit. I'm sure many offenders would benefit from other options - such as proffesional counselling, or work based re-habilitation.
2. Preventing crime in the first place and looking closely at what is wrong with the country - why are these crimes happening?
Having said this i think complusory Military service should be restored, if anything to teach some respect in young people. |
