after college, how many departments should i apply to in order to have a fair chance of getting hired? i hear people only have a 3 in 100 chance of getting hired but does that logic hold true to those with a B.A. degree and for those who are bilingual? thanks to all who answered.

Apply to every department within the area you live. Generally speaking, the best dept. would be your state police. 3 in 100 in incorrect.
Few things to consider:
Credit rating.
Physical condition.
Psychological condition.
Ability to solve problems.
You have two things in your favor:
1) You are bilingual
(Assuming the language you speak is used in the area you work)
2) You have a degree.

In general, the nationwide average is 3-4% success (my dept's average was 2%). That includes passing the following:
1. Written exam
2. Oral boards
3. Physical agility test
4. Background check (where most wash out)
5. Polygraph (where many wash out)
6. Psychological exam
7. Medical exam
8. Academy (where some don't complete and graduate)
The first 7 steps have to generally be passed before a department hires you and puts you through the academy. You should apply to as many departments as you can (at the same time). Once you've hired on and passed the probationary period, you can generally lateral over to a department that you would want to remain at.

Pretty tough these days unfortunately. I'm actually in the process right now, and it is difficult. Endless paperwork, one exam after another, and not to mention the waiting list. Its a mile long. In some states, the list is short, but in some states like NY where I am, the list is long. |

yea its hard, i'm quite sure that you can't have a criminal record, and yes many people probably do get eliminated, but thats the purpose, only get the best people you can. Also, you have to get sprayed with pepper spray directly in the face, i guess that you'd probably have to get hit with a taser too. |

It is not difficult @ all if you have the personality they are looking for. If you want revenge on society, enjoy abusing & humilating people, & don't mind clubing someone in the head every once in awhile, you should fit right in. |
