In Illinois, it is very competitive. Often times there are over 100 applicants for 1 or 2 openings. Most departments here test for an eligibility list that expires after 2 years. |

In the SF Bay Area, about 2 percent of those applying will make it all the way through the entire hiring process/academy.

I currently work as a Background Investigator and Recruitment officer for our department. In order for us to hire our last academy of 50 officers, we went through over 2100 applications. The hiring process consists of 14 different steps and the entire process takes approx. 10-12 months to complete. Because of the high pay and excellent benefits, the competition is very intense. The percent of applicants that make it through the hiring process and make it through the academy is approx. 2.8% |
